My Favorite Tablets and eBook Readers of 2011

My Favorite Tablets and eBook Readers of 2011

I’ve tested and reviewed a number of tablets and ebook readers in 2011, and as this year comes to a close, I decided to write down a list of my favorite tablets and ereaders of the year, the ones I personally use the most.

I’ve broken down the rankings into three categories: 10″ tablets, 7″ tablets, and 6″ ebook readers, with a couple of honorable mentions thrown in for good measure. So here it is, my favorite ebook readers and tablets for 2011…

Sony Reader Android App for Tablets

Reader for Android Tablets

Back in September Sony released a tablet-specific Sony Reader app for Android. At the time it was only compatible with the Sony Tablet S, but they said it would be updated to support other tablets in early December.

I happened to remember this fact yesterday so decided to check the Android Market to see if Sony had updated the Reader for Tablet app. And they have. It now works with any tablet running Android 3.0 and up.

Sony Issues Firmware Update For Sony Reader PRS-T1

Sony PRS-T1

Sony has issued a firmware update for the Sony PRS-T1 ebook reader. The update is supposed to fix some bugs like the freezing and random page flipping issues that some users are experiencing (not me, luckily).

In order to install the update, you need to connect your Sony Reader to your computer with the USB cable and then launch the Sony Desktop software. If it doesn’t prompt to install the new firmware automatically, hit the help button then “check for updates”.

The Best eReader for Under $100: Sony Reader PRS-T1

Sony Reader PRS-T1

The Sony Reader PRS-T1 is my top pick for an ebook reader this holiday season under $100.

When it was first released, the Sony PRS-T1 sold for $149. Then Sony dropped the price to $129, and now it is on sale until December 24th for just $99 with free shipping. A thirty three percent price drop in two months. Not bad.

Sony PRS-T1 On Sale Again, As Low As $114

Sony PRS-T1 Red

Sony has once again slashed the price of the Sony Reader PRS-T1 from its original price when it was first introduced of $149 down to $129. And Amazon has an even better deal right now through Electronics Expo, taking the price down to a $114 both for the red and black Readers.

It is surprising that Sony is able to offer such a low price on the PRS-T1, especially since Sony is generally known for having higher prices. Last year’s 6-inch Sony Reader retailed for $100 more, and with a lot less features. Yet they’ve somehow managed to price the PRS-T1 lower than Amazon’s equivalent touchscreen ereader, which goes for $139 without ads ($99 with ads).

Sony Reader PRS-T1 eReader on Sale for $129, $116 for Students

Sony Reader PRS-T1

The Sony Reader PRS-T1 is on sale from a number of retailers this week for $129, including Sony.com and Amazon. It’s only been out for little over a month, so it’s about time they marked the price down. It normally sells for $149.

If you are a student, you can get a further discount from Sony, knocking the price down to $116 at their Education Store. Sony also has bundled packages from both stores that come with covers and ebook gift cards.

How to Un-Root Sony Reader PRS-T1 Back to Stock

Sony PRS-T1

I’ve had a few days to experiment with my newly hacked Sony PRS-T1, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it needs a lot of work, so I decided to un-root it to take it back to its stock functionality.

The truth is the Nook Touch makes for a much better hacked E Ink tablet; I’d rather use it for Android apps for the time being unless the PRS-T1 package gets some major improvements.

Rooting Directions for Sony Reader PRS-T1 (Video)

Rooted Sony PRS-T1

If you’ve been eagerly awaiting directions on how to root the Sony PRS-T1, I’ve got good news. Rooting directions have been posted over on a Russian website, and you don’t even have to sacrifice the Reader’s stock functionality because that continues to work like normal.

The rooting package is still in its early stages, and I wouldn’t recommend it for beginners, but if you know your way around Android it provides for a good starting point. I managed to root my PRS-T1 in about 5 minutes, and I’ve got video proof below.

Review: Reader Wi-Fi Cover with Light (PRSA-CL10B)

Reader Wi-Fi Cover with Light

When I first opened the packaging and inspected the lighted cover for the Sony PRS-T1, I wasn’t impressed. I was expecting something of higher quality from a company like Sony, especially considering the lighted cover costs $49.

Things only got worse once I placed the Reader Wi-Fi into the cover. I immediately decided that I absolutely hated the cover and was going to send it back. I almost considered doing it that very moment, in fact.
