Entourage Pocket Edge $79 Today Only, Insanely Good Deal

Pocket Edge

The no-longer-made Entourage Edge is selling for an eye-poppingly low price of $79.99 today only on Woot. That’s such a good price that I’m even tempted to buy one, and another gadget is the last thing I need, so I’m going to have to avoid looking at this post for the rest of the day.

The Entourage Pocket Edge is a very unique device; it’s a blend between an ereader and a tablet. It has two screens, one E Ink and one LCD. The E Ink side uses a 6″ Vizplex screen. It is a touchscreen too, a Wacom touchscreen, and comes with a stylus. The LCD side is a 7” WXGA 800 x 480 touchscreen, and uses a resistive touchscreen.

The Entourage Edge Store has Closed, the Edge is Gone

Entourage Edge

Sad news for owners of the Entourage Edge. As of May 21st, Entourage Systems has closed the doors on the Entourage Edge store, according to a note on Entourage’s homepage.

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise given the fact that the Entourage Pocket Edge has been deeply discounted of late, and the fact that I noticed it and the original Edge had disappeared completely from Entourage’s website several weeks back.

Entourage Pocket Edge Half-Price, No Longer on Entourage’s Website

Entourage Edge

I’ve been keeping my eyes on this for the past few weeks and it appears that there’s definitely something fishy going on with Entourage Systems, makers of the the Android-powered Entourage Edge and Pocket Edge.

For starters, both devices have been completely removed from the Entourage website. Clicking on the device tab takes you to the “where to buy” page. And if you enter the URL for the device pages manually, it automatically re-directs to another page.

Entourage Edge Now Selling From Best Buy and Other Resellers

Entourage Edge

Just happened to notice that the Entourage Edge, the first foldable device to have both E Ink and LCD touchscreens, is now selling online from Best Buy along with some other retailers. In fact, the Entourage Edge website now refers all orders to their resellers, even though they still sell accessories.

Interestingly, the price is listed at $499 from Best Buy for the Midnight Blue model, which is the only color they currently have listed, and some other vendors are selling the Edge for $549. PC Connection has them for $499 as well, and have several color options to choose from. The disparity in pricing doesn’t make any sense, especially when Entourage is listing the higher price on their website.

It’s odd that Best Buy sells them online only. Given the Edge’s uniqueness, getting them in stores for people to see and try out would make a lot more sense.

Lots of Entourage Edge News

Entourage Edge

Entourage Systems, the company that makes the Entourage Edge, released three press releases today and yesterday, announcing some new content partners.

First, the Entourage Systems’ ebook store will soon have an additional 1,000 EPUB ebooks from O’Reilly Media. According to the press release, the Entourage ebook store already has over 200,000 trade titles, e-textbooks, magazines, and newspapers, in addition to a million or two of Google’s free public domain books.

The second press release is the biggest news. Entourage has partnered with Cengage Learning, a leading provider of innovative teaching, learning and research solutions for the academic, professional and library markets worldwide—according to their website.

The partnership will provide the Entourage Edge access to the Cengage Learning catalog of digital books to students and educators through the unique Entourage Edge platform coming this fall semester.

The third press release is about Entourage partnering with the University of Chicago to include additional educational titles into the Entourage Systems’ ebook store.

The partnership with The University of Chicago Press will offer over 1,000 digital titles in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences, with particular strengths in sociology, philosophy, the life sciences, economics, history, anthropology and literary theory fields.

The last bit of Entourage Edge news is that the device is now listed on Best Buy’s website. It has said “Coming Soon” for a couple of weeks now. They only show the midnight blue model, the one that sells for $499. The black, white, red, and ice blue models sell for $539 from Entourage’s website. No sign of those at Best Buy.

Entourage Edge Comes to the Netherlands, Costs a Mint

Entourage Edge

The first dualscreen ebook reader laptop hybrid, aka the Entourage Edge, has reached the windmill-swept plains of the Netherlands.

The most surprising news of this is the €599 starting price for midnight blue model, and €639 for the black, white, red, and ice blue models. The latter price converts to about $800 USD!

In the US the device sells for $499 and $539 from the Entourage Edge website. So that’s quite a drastic increase, even considering VAT.

A quick look at laptop prices in the Netherlands reveals that there are several really, really nice laptops for about €500, with decent ones priced at €300.

The Entourage Edge has some cool features, but it’s going to be tough sell at that price-point.

The Edge has a 9.7-inch E Ink screen with a Wacom tablet touchscreen on one side and a 10-inch color LCD touchscreen on the other side. It has Wi-Fi and bluetooth, runs Google Android, and has a built-in microphone, speakers, and webcam. It supports Adobe EPUB, PDF, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint thorough DataViz Documents To Go Software.

More specs, photos, and a video can be found on our dedicated Entourage Edge page.
