3.88 stars, 901 reviews

Alluding to both the Sherlock Holmes canon and the Old Ones of the Cthulhu Mythos, this Hugo Award-winning short story will delight fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, H. P. Lovecraft, and of course, Neil Gaiman.

A Study in Emerald draws listeners in through carefully revealed details as a consulting detective and his narrator friend solve the mystery of a murdered German noble. But with its subtle allusions and surprise ending, this mystery hints that the real fun in solving this case lies in imagining all the details that Gaiman doesn’t reveal, and challenges listeners to be detectives themselves.

FREE: The Future of a Radical Price by Chris Anderson

FREE: The Future of a Radical Price

4.15 stars 517 reviews

The New York Times best-selling author heralds the future of business in Free. In his revolutionary best seller, The Long Tail, Chris Anderson demonstrated how the online marketplace creates niche markets, allowing products and consumers to connect in a way that has never been possible before. Now, in Free, he makes the compelling case that, in many instances, businesses can profit more from giving things away than they can by charging for them.

Far more than a promotional gimmick, Free is a business strategy that may well be essential to a company’s survival. The costs associated with the growing online economy are trending toward zero at an incredible rate. Never in the course of human history have the primary inputs to an industrial economy fallen in price so fast and for so long.

Just think that in 1961 a single transistor cost $10; now Intel’s latest chip has two billion transistors and sells for $300 (or 0.000015 cents per transistor – effectively too cheap to price). The traditional economics of scarcity just don’t apply to bandwidth, processing power, and hard-drive storage. Yet this is just one engine behind the new Free, a reality that goes beyond a marketing gimmick or a cross-subsidy.

Anderson also points to the growth of the reputation economy; explains different models for unleashing the power of Free; and shows how to compete when your competitors are giving away what you’re trying to sell.

In Free, Chris Anderson explores this radical idea for the new global economy and demonstrates how this revolutionary price can be harnessed for the benefit of consumers and businesses alike.

The Conservative Nanny State: How the Wealthy Use the Government to Stay Rich and Get Richer by Dean Baker

How the Wealthy Use the Government to Stay Rich and Get Richer

3.07 stars, 72 reviews

In his new book, economist Dean Baker debunks the myth that conservatives favor the market over government intervention. In fact, conservatives rely on a range of “nanny state” policies that ensure the rich get richer while leaving most Americans worse off. It’s time for the rules to change. Sound economic policy should harness the market in ways that produce desirable social outcomes: decent wages, good jobs, and affordable health care.

Free eBook and Audiobook From Cemetery Dance: The Painted Darkness

Cemetery Dance

The Painted Darkness by Brian James Freeman is free in both ebook and audiobook form for a limited time from Cemetery Dance Publications, the leading specialty press publisher of horror and dark fiction.

The hardcover is currently available for pre-order from several sites like Amazon and Barnes and Noble, and will be released in November.

You may recall, Cemetery Dance is the publisher that released the First Edition Hardcover of Stephen King’s Blockade Billy, becoming the first small press publisher to debut a new Stephen King book in decades.

Aside from publishing books, there’s the Cemetery Dance Magazine, which has been around forever (I used to read it all the time). I found this quote from the CD website very interesting, given the current state of publishing:

“Our flagship magazine, Cemetery Dance, has won every major genre award and is healthier than ever — with a higher newsstand and subscriber circulation than ever before, ever-increasing advertiser support, and a continuing reputation for superb content and design. We’re well-known for publishing the biggest and the brightest stars in the genre, often before they’re discovered by the rest of the world.”

Cemetery Dance Magazine is so popular among contributing authors that it can take well over 1 year just to get an acceptance (the odds are less than 1% so don’t get your hopes up) or rejection letter for a submitted short story.

The ebook below is in PDF format—don’t worry, it’s formatted quite well—and will work on virtually any ebook reader. The ebook includes an exclusive interview with Ray Bradbury: ‘We Have Too Many Inventions!’, an afterword by the author discussing the free ebook promo, an interview with the author by Bram Stoker Award winning author Norman Prentiss, and a coupon for $5 off the hardcover edition at CemeteryDance.com.

Follow the link for the audiobook as well; it streams from the website. The narrator sounds slightly like Adam West. Spooky.

The Painted Darkness by Brian James Freeman

The Painted Darkness

PDF eBook and MP3 Audiobook

When Henry was a child, something terrible happened in the woods behind his home, something so shocking he could only express his terror by drawing pictures of what he had witnessed. Eventually, Henry’s mind blocked out the bad memories, but he continued to draw, often at night by the light of the moon.

Twenty years later, Henry makes his living by painting his disturbing works of art. He loves his wife and his son, and life couldn’t be better… except there’s something not quite right about the old stone farmhouse his family now calls home. There’s something strange living in the cramped cellar, in the maze of pipes that feed the ancient steam boiler.

A winter storm is brewing, and soon Henry will learn the true nature of the monster waiting for him down in the darkness. He will battle this demon and, in the process, he may discover what really happened when he was a child — and why, in times of trouble, he thinks: I paint against the darkness.

But will Henry learn the truth in time to avoid the terrible fate awaiting him… or will the thing in the cellar get him and his family first?

Written as both a meditation on the art of creation and as an examination of the secret fears we all share, The Painted Darkness is a terrifying look at the true cost we pay when we run from our grief — and what happens when we’re finally forced to confront the monsters we know all too well.

Download The Painted Darkness »

The FAQ for the free ebook is funny and informative at the same time. Here’s part of what the author says . . .

Q: But why are you doing this?

A: I decided I really wanted this book to be read by as many people as possible. The Painted Darkness incorporates many of the themes that are important to me and it uses a style that is pretty familiar to my regular readers, so I want to see whether this free download will attract NEW readers to my work in general and help increase sales of the print version thanks to increased word of mouth.

Q: Aren’t you afraid that giving the book away for free will hurt sales of the print edition? Isn’t this a little crazy?

A: Well, we wouldn’t be doing this if I thought that was a serious possibility. I guess it is possible I went crazy and no one could tell the difference? I guess we’ll see.

Q: Are you an idiot?

A: I sure hope not. Would that be better than being crazy?

Q: About the story itself… is this a gory horror story?

A: No, not at all. Although much of my work has dark themes, I think you’ll see that much of the darkness is internal. Blood and guts aren’t my thing. I usually dwell on themes of loss and loneliness and small town life. I think readers of many kinds of fiction will like The Painted Darkness, which is one of the reasons I wanted to try this experiment. If you read the sales copy and the blurbs, you’ll get a pretty good feel for the type of story this is. And did I mention it’s free? Why not download the book and see if you like it?

Books-A-Million Giving Away Sony Readers Every Day in July

Sony Reader from Books-A-Million

Books-A-Million, one of the nation’s leading book retailers with 227 stores in 23 states, is giving away a shiny new Sony PRS-505 each day this month to promote their new ebook store.

In order to win the Sony Reader, you have to purchase an ebook from the Books-A-Million website to be entered into the daily drawings. Or you can send a self-addressed stamped envelope along with your email address to Books-A-Million (the address is listed on the contest rules page).

An interesting note from the contest rules, entries are not carried over to the following day. Meaning you have to enter the contest each day to win. Better odds of winning, but more ebooks to buy or letters to send.

It’s a bit odd that they are giving away an ereader that Sony stopped making about a year ago, but the fact is the Sony PRS-505 is still a highly-coveted ebook reader; many people will probably enter the contest just to try and get one since they are no longer sold in stores and are way over-priced on the web (right now a new 505 is going for $249 on Amazon.com, while the newer 600 with several more features is just $165 on Amazon through Buy.com).

A quick look at the prices for Books-A-Million’s ebooks reveals that quite a few are higher priced than competing ebooks stores. A lot of the main-stream bestsellers are the same price as Amazon and B&N, but some of the general titles appear to be more expensive. However, they have some sort of club to join where you get more $$$ off purchases—not sure if it applies to ebooks or not.

Also, their ebooks are in Adobe EPUB format. And most say they are only available to US and Canadian billing addresses.

10 Top Free eBooks From Barnes and Noble

Here’s a list of 10 bestselling free ebooks from B&N. Barnes and Noble ebooks have their own form of DRM encryption that requires the use of Barnes and Noble’s eReader software for iPad, other iProducts, the Blackberry, Mac and PC. B&N ebooks also work on the iRex DR-800, Pandigital Novel, and of course the Nook.

The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker by Leanna Renee Hieber

3.5 stars, 126 reviews

Six young men and women are called to protect the living world from the dead in Hieber’s Gothic romance debut. Mysterious powers give Alexi and his peers the mission of keeping the restless dead in line and seeking a prophesied seventh guardian. Miss Percy Parker, an albino orphan with a talent for languages, fills none of their expectations, but Alexi is drawn to her all the same.

Hieber draws Victorian London as beautiful and grim, with depictions of Jack the Ripper as a nightmarish many-headed hound alongside charming descriptions of the Athens Academy, Percy’s boarding school, and Greek mythology that smartly draws together various elements of the story. The supporting characters are nuanced and appealing but given short shrift by the narrow focus on Percy and Alexi, though future sequels may give them more room to play. Hieber’s debut shows great potential, and readers will want to revisit her intriguing world.

Win an Apple iPad and Kobo Reader from Kobo

Before the agency model went into place, Kobo used to offer all kinds of coupon codes and discounts for their ebooks.

Now that agency ebooks have a fixed price, you’ve got to hand it to Kobo for coming up with new promotions to keep things interesting.

This time they are giving away an Apple iPad. Every ebook purchased is entered into the contest. Unfortunately I was a bit late in finding this promotion—it ends on Thursday, June 10th.

Secondly, on Kobo’s homepage there’s an animation that says “Buy any Stephenie Meyer eBook and you’re entered to win a Kobo eReader!” I can’t find the details, however, so I’m not sure when that promotion ends.

How to Win a Free Kobo eReader

Came across this on Twitter, Kobo is giving away 5 Kobo eReaders this week and 5 more next week (May 18th-31st).

All you have to do is buy an ebook from the Kobo ebook store to be entered in the contest. Actually, I skimmed over the rules and you don’t even have to buy an ebook. You can send a fax instead.

Here are the entry rules:

No purchase necessary. To enter the Contest, simply go to Kobobooks.com, find the eBook of your choice and click on the ‘Buy’ button to purchase. Complete your purchase and you will automatically be entered for a chance to win (“eBook entries”) OR participate without having to buy an eBook by sending a Fax (“Fax Entries”) to: 416.977.2889 setting out your full legal name, city or town of residence, age, daytime telephone number with area code, email address and a description in approximately 35 words why you like Kobo. eBook Entries and Fax Entries must be received during the contest period. The sole determinant of time for the purposes of receipt of a valid entry will be the sponsor’s server machine (s). Limit of six (6) entries, regardless of method of entry.

More information can be found on the contest details page.
