Kindle eReaders: How to Use Custom Fonts for All Kindle eBooks – No Hacks

Kindle Custom Fonts

There’s a simple trick to change the default font type to use custom fonts across all ebooks for Kindle devices (except the Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire). You can customize line spacing, margins, and justification as well. And this includes both DRM protected ebooks and ebooks without DRM.

The Kindle does not need to be jailbreaked or hacked in any way. All that is required to make font and layout changes is a free plugin for Calibre called Kindle Collections, some font files, and a few minutes to set everything up.

Kindle 4 vs Kindle 3 Keyboard Comparison Review (Video)

Kindle 4 vs Kindle 3 Keyboard

This Kindle 4 vs Kindle 3 review is a comparison between the new $79 Kindle and the Kindle 3, now known as the Kindle Keyboard.

This review does not compare the third 6-inch model, the Kindle Touch, because it has not been released just yet. I’ll post some comparisons with it in a couple of weeks.

Amazon Now Offers Kindle Trade-ins, But is it Worth it?

Kindle Trade-in

Have you heard? Amazon now accepts Kindle trade-ins in exchange for gift cards for Amazon.com. They’ve been doing this for awhile for other products, including tablets and other ereader brands, so it’s about time they added Kindles to the trade-in program too.

What’s truly odd is that some of the Special Offers Kindles are valued higher than regular Kindles without ads—how does that make any sense? Can’t Amazon just put the ads on the ones without Special Offers?

Kindle Keyboard Software Update Version 3.3 Adds New Features

Kindle 3

Amazon has started rolling out a new software update, version 3.3, for the Kindle Keyboard, formally known as the Kindle 3.

The update gives the Kindle Keyboard the ability to sync and archive personal documents and non-Kindle ebooks (here’s the post from yesterday explaining this new Kindle feature in case you missed it: Uploading Non-Kindle eBooks and Personal Documents for Archiving and Syncing on Kindles).

Amazon Changes Name of Kindle 3 to Kindle Keyboard, Drops Price to $99

Kindle Keyboard

It looks like Amazon is going to continue to sell the Kindle 3 along with the new basic Kindle and Kindle Touch for those that want a keyboard, but instead of calling it the Kindle 3 it is now called the Kindle Keyboard and Kindle Keyboard 3G.

Amazon also dropped the price of the Special Offers Wi-Fi Kindle from $114 to $99. All the other prices remain the same, however. The non-ad version is still $139 and the 3G Special Offers Kindle is $139, $189 without ads.

It’s good to have options, but with so many Kindles it is going to really confuse new customers. Counting the ad-supported variations and Kindle Fire Tablet, there are now eleven different Kindles to choose from.

Kindle with Special Offers Getting Coupon Deals from AmazonLocal

Kindle Local

Amazon announced today that they are going to start rolling out a new feature on Kindle 3G and Kindle WiFi with Special Offers that advertises coupon deals on the screensavers for local businesses using AmazonLocal.

Essentially, Kindle with Special Offers owners can view their city’s deals and buy the deal directly using the Kindle, which uses your Amazon account to process the transaction so that you don’t have to enter a bunch of information every time. Once purchased, a voucher for the deal appears on the Kindle’s homescreen, and then you can simply show it to the merchant on your Kindle or print out a copy of the voucher instead by visiting the AmazonLocal website.

Ad-Supported Kindles More Popular Than Non-ad Kindles

Kindle Special Offer

It’s true. The Kindle Wi-Fi and Kindle 3G with Special Offers both top Amazon’s best sellers list, with the 3G version currently outpacing the Wi-Fi model.

Amazon first introduced the Kindle Wi-Fi with Special Offers back on April 11th, 2011. Then started selling the 3G Kindle with Special Offers on May 24. These ad-supported Kindles are essentially the exact same as the regular Kindle, but have a small advertisement at the bottom of the homescreen and on the screensavers when the device is asleep. Some are ads and some are special offers like coupon deals for items and gift cards at Amazon.

Run Kindle 3 Software on Kindle DX and Kindle 2 (Video)

Kindle 3

It turns out that it’s possible to get the Kindle DX, both generations, and the Kindle 2 to successfully run the Kindle 3′s software, and smoothly too.

This comes with several benefits because the Kindle 3′s software is superior to its siblings’ in many ways. The web browser is a lot more advanced, PDF support is much better and adds several new features, there are more font options, and other enhancements.
