Samsung E-6 Removed From JR.com, US Release Doubtful

Samsung E60

As noted in the previous post about the Samsung E-60 being available in France, Korea, and the Netherlands, I had sent an email to JR.com inquiring about the US version of the Samsung ebook reader, the E-6, that has been listed for pre-order on their website for several months.

Yesterday I received two emails from JR and it doesn’t look good for the Samsung E-6 in the US. The first email mentioned that the particular Samsung model is not available from the manufacturer, and that there is no expected timetable for it.

The second email was a standard stock alert email that said, “We are sorry to inform you that due to circumstances beyond our control, we are unable provide you with this information. At the current time, we are unable to obtain sufficient information from the manufacturer as to when or if we will be receiving a shipment.”

And with that, the Samsung E-6 ebook reader has been officially removed from the JR website altogether. With no other retailers in the US, it doesn’t look like it will be coming to the US any time soon.

I don’t see why Samsung is so eager to completely drop the US market altogether. The device was listed at $299. It has a lot going for it—Wi-Fi, touchscreen, slide out keyboard, Samsung’s brand name—and even with all the current ebook reader price wars they could have taken a little off the price and still carved out a market.

The Samsung E-60 Comes to France

Samsung E-60

After being available in Korea for the past 5 months, the Samsung E-60 ebook reader is now coming to France.

In Korea, the Samsung E-60 sells from Kyobo for 349,000 Won, which converts to about $285 USD.

And now, a French website, Actualitte, is reporting that the Samsung E-60 is coming to 228 Carrefour retail stores in France for €329, which converts to about $412 USD. It also sells in the Netherlands for the same price.

The price seems way to high at first glance, but compared to other ebook readers selling on Amazon France, the price is in line with the advanced features that it offers.

Still though, a Kindle 2 can be had for around €210 in France after various import, shipping, and duty charges.

The US version, the Samsung E-6, has been up for pre-order on JR.com for a few months now. Ironically, I sent JR an email yesterday to see if they have an ETA for the unit—haven’t heard back yet.

Here’s a new video of the Samsung ebook reader that I found on YouTube yesterday. The quality isn’t great, and it’s kind of long, but it shows a lot of its features. I’d suggest jumping to the middle of the clip.

There’s another video and a description of the device’s specs on our dedicated Samsung ebook readers page.

Samsung eBook Readers

First off, the Samsung E6 is available for pre-order from JR.com for $299.99. I'll post a new page shortly that covers the details of the E6.

Engadget is reporting that the Samsung E60 and E61 are coming to the UK in July, with the E60 costing £299 (yikes!).

The press release over at Engadget reveals some finer details, here's a few:

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., is set to start the distribution of its new e-Book Readers with partnerships with leading high street retailers later this year. The range will be stocked online and in stores with the new 6″, Wi-Fi enabled SNE-60 e-Book Reader, available to pre-order from selected high street retailers in the coming months.

Unlike other e-Book Reader devices, Samsung's SNE-60 uses handwriting functionality to allow users to annotate their reading selections, calendars and notes with a built-in electromagnetic resonance (EMR) stylus pen. This dedicated pen prevents mistypes caused by hands and other objects that may graze the screen's surface. A variety of pen and eraser thicknesses makes the Samsung e-Book Reader perfect for drawing and writing.
