It’s Official: Kindle Coming to all Target Stores on June 6

The title says it all. Target issued a press release today confirming their plans for Kindle Nationwide.

Getting Kindles in stores where people can see and touch them is going to help sales and presence with all the other ereaders coming to stores of late. It was something Amazon had to do sooner or later.

The obvious downside with buying a Kindle at Target is the extra sales tax versus buying online from Amazon, roughly $15-$25 for the Kindle 2 and $30-$45 for the Kindle DX, depending on your local percentage, of course.

Kindle News: Asus, Android, Target, Firmware

kindle asus

Some Kindle news to report, Amazon has partnered with Asus to bring the Kindle for PC application pre-installed on the following models of netbooks and notebooks, with more coming soon, of course.

Asus Eee PC: 1005PE-MU27- BK, 1005PE-MU27-BU, 1005PE-MU27-WT, 1005PE-MU27-PI.

Asus UL Series: UL30A-X5K, UL30VT-X1K.

Asus is one of the major brands for laptops. Having Kindle software pre-installed is sure to reach a wide audience. Couple that with the fact that Asus is expected to release their own ebook reader, the Asus DR-900, at any time now. It makes you wonder if it will be integrated with the Kindle store and software as well.

In other Kindle news, Amazon announced the pending release of the Kindle for Android application. Here’s a sneak peak.

Kindle for Android

Also, there are several reports that the Kindle in select Target stores experiment has worked out well enough to bring the Kindle to all Target stores on June 6th. No confirmation from Amazon yet, but it looks promising.

And last but not least, Kindle owners are starting to report receiving the new 2.5 firmware updates. Some new features include: collections for improved organization of ebooks and documents, social networking for sharing on Facebook and Twitter, and PDF pan and zoom.

Kindle News: New Firmware Coming and Mother’s Day Promo

First off, just noticed that Amazon is now offering free 2-day shipping on the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX for Mother's Day, which is on May 9th.

  • Password Protection: Password protect your Kindle when you're not using it.
  • More Fonts & Improved Clarity: Enjoy two new larger font sizes and sharper fonts for an even more comfortable reading experience.
  • Facebook & Twitter Posts: Share book passages with friends on Facebook and Twitter directly from your Kindle.
  • Popular Highlights: See what the Kindle community thinks are the most interesting passages in the books you're reading.

Target Stores To Sell Amazon Kindle

A couple of weeks before Barnes and Noble officially announced the Nook last year, Amazon casually announced Kindle International, making it available to over 175 countries.

And now that Apple has released the iPad, Amazon is again taking steps to make the Kindle more widely available. First, of course, the new Kindle iPad app. And today it was officially announced that Kindles will be sold from Target stores.

“As the first brick-and-mortar retailer to carry Amazon's Kindle, Target will make Kindle available at its flagship downtown Minneapolis store and 102 south Florida stores beginning April 25, rolling out to more Target stores later this year.”
