Kindle eReader, Tablet, and eBook Deals

May 23, 2015 by Nathan

Kindle Sales

A couple weeks ago I posted about Amazon Warehouse Deals offering the 9.7-inch Kindle DX, open-box units, for 20% off, taking the final price down to a mere $103, which is a crazy low price for a 9.7-inch E Ink ebook reader, even if it is outdated.

Now the same deal is back for the Kindle DX, along with 20% off a number of other open-box Kindle ereaders and Fire tablets.

You can get an older Kindle Fire for under $50, or a 3G Kindle Paperwhite for $76.

This 20% off sale on open-box Kindles runs all the way through June 22nd, or until supplies run out.

Amazon also has a number of Kindle book sales going on right now. Their main Gold Box Deal of the day takes up to 80% off over 45 popular titles. Most are only $1.99, including Water for Elephants and books from Jhumpa Lahiri, Brad Meltzer, Amy Tan, Jane Green, and others.

Kindle eBook Readers on Sale

These are the 20% off open-box Kindles from Amazon Warehouse Deals:

Kindle DX – $103.11 after discount.

Kindle Paperwhite 3G – $76.29 after discount. This is the first gen Paperwhite, not the current model.

Kindle Fire Tablets on Sale

Kindle Fire 2 – $47.74 after discount.

Kindle Fire HD 7 – $61.60 after discount for the 16GB model; $82.20 for the 32GB model. This is the previous generation model.

Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ 4G LTE – $154.40 after discount for the 32GB model; $175.20 for the 64GB model. This is the previous generation model, with 4G LTE wireless.

The previous generation 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX is also on “sale” for $50-$100 off until July 17th for new units, but the price still isn’t very good considering other tablets on the market, so it’s hard to even consider this a sale.

Just a heads up, I purchased the DX through Amazon Warehouse deals and it’s a refurbished model and also the 3G wireless doesn’t work on the units. This has been stated by other reviewers as well. I sent mine back..

As mentioned in comments on the other post, you have to call Amazon support to get the 3G wireless setup and working. They just need to enter a couple of the device’s specific number codes and then the 3G wireless will work. I think these were originally international units that weren’t setup to work with wireless in the US by default.

The Kindle Fire HDX is $349. That’s why I said it’s not a very good deal. I don’t know what you’re seeing for $249 unless it’s the used ones. The previous model Fire HD’s are the 20% off open-box deals.

I recently bought a Kindle DX, mainly to read scanned PDFs, which don’t do well on 6 inch e-readers. As there is often a decided improvement in reading scanned PDFs on a 7 inch tablet. I figured that the 9.7″ screen of the DX would be even better for scanned PDFs.
I tried out some old scanned PDFs on the DX. The big screen is just what they needed. I was expecting an improvement, and the improvement exceeded my expectations.

Per the previous comments, I called Amazon to help me get set up. It took maybe 10 minutes, no glitches. Good Amazon service rep, which is par for the course.
