The good news is we now have confirmation that Amazon is about to release a new basic Kindle for 2024; the bad news is they’re basically just re-releasing the 2022 version with a few minor changes—typical Amazon.
The new Kindle turned up for sale on a Spanish website last night and someone posted a screenshot of it on reddit. The webpage has been temporarily taken down, but all the pertinent info has already been ascertained.
There’s a new green color, and the frontlight is 25% brighter, and that’s about it for changes. There’s still no warm frontlight. The power button is still on the bottom edge where it’s easy to accidentally press. There are no page buttons. No real upgrades and no innovation at all.
There is mention of better contrast and smoother page turns, but those are common claims that always turn out to be barely perceptible.
Amazon is so uncreative when it comes to releasing new Kindles. Hopefully the new Kindle Paperwhite will have some actual upgrades (or whatever the second new model turns out to be, but it almost has to be a Paperwhite since Amazon is too unimaginative to come up with something different).
This new Kindle for 2024 has nothing interesting going for it whatsoever. Who really cares about a brighter frontlight? Most people would rather have a warm frontlight, but apparently that’s asking too much. Other companies offer warm frontlights on their basic models, and other companies sell color models now too, but not Amazon.
It still has 16GB of storage space, and a 6″ E Ink screen with 300ppi. Battery life is now rated at 8 weeks instead of 6 so it looks like they did improve that at least. The overall design and size is 99% the same as the 2022 model. There are black and blue colors like before, and a new green option.
The new 2024 Kindle still isn’t listed on Amazon’s website yet, but it’ll probably show up soon. The website that leaked the new Kindle says it’ll get released on October 1st.

Wow…what a letdown.
Realist says
It’s game over for the Kindle, we might as well accept it. Amazon’s heart isn’t in it anymore.

Paperwhite just got leaked too. The only difference is 10% brighter display. Is Amazon for real? This must be the worst upgrade in history of Kindles. What a joke.
fx says
Sorry, I take it back. Seems like it wasn’t real. That’s just me obsessing with what’s coming on Reddit 😂 Amazon should finally reveal it so that we can stop speculating 😃

I have two kindle a basic and a PW, I don’t use them since Amazon updated the Kindle apps for Android to allow text to speech. And i have mostly said good bye to audible too. The Kindle text to speech is great for my needs. As a person with hearing loss and wearing hearing aids and listening to the speech while reading along is proving to mt a therapy tool to help me understand speech and conversations.
Claude says
Well, sorry if I’m still happy with my last gen Paperwhite. 😉
Rick says
I was happy also until I used a Kobo Libra 2. Then I sold my kindle.
Claude says
Kobo readers are like Linux users. They always have to try to convert people to their brand.
Fractal says
Well this is not true, but if it was, what do you lose with it?
Chris says
After having used a Paperwhite for years, I bought a Kobo Libra 2 six months ago. I haven’t turned on my Kindle once since then.
Kindle certainly has the lion’s share of ecosystem, but Kobo’s hardware and software is leagues ahead, and Amazon doesn’t seem interested in improving.
Elehan says
Amazon immediately stop to produce “entry level” Kindle scam. Dude, it’s 2024, what the nonsense we are talking about? Whats entry level? Who buys it?
Rick says
YAWN
Tina Hamaker says
Brighter? Big deal. For the past month I have been using my last gen Paperwhite on Dark Mode and with the warmth as yellow as it will go. Trying to help my migraines.
Filiep says
What is truly amazing is that Amazon can afford to do that: bring out year after year the same old device, and call it “new”, and keep selling lots of its product.
I have a Kindle Voyage and I won’t upgrade to anything else until there are sufficient innovations.
I am not convinced it will be an Amazon product, though, with its closed universe.
Jase says
I like the new color, but I love my Scribe too much.
