Last week at Comic-Con in San Diego Comixology announced that they will now offer DRM-free downloads of comics purchased from Comixology. This allows readers the option to save comics for backup outside of the Comixology app.
Not all titles are available DRM-free; it’s up to individual publishers to decide if they want to offer a DRM-free download option or not. Unfortunately the big name publishers like DC and Marvel aren’t onboard with the concept of offering a user-friendly DRM-free option, but that’s not really surprising.
So far participating publishers include Image Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, Zenescope Entertainment, MonkeyBrain Comics, Thrillbent, and Top Shelf Productions.
For those with a Comixology account, you can find the list of comicbooks you own that support DRM-free downloads on Comixology’s website in the “My Backups” tab of the “My Books” area.
The DRM-free comics are available in high-definition PDF or CBZ formats, and can be viewed with any app or device that supports those formats—they are no longer restricted to only Comixology’s apps.

Comixology is the leading digital comics marketplace with more than 75 publishers selling 50,000 comics. Earlier this year they were acquired by Amazon.
