It looks like all the random bugs and problems people have been experiencing with their Kindles lately since the last software update has leaked into other parts of the Kindle ecosystem.
I noticed some weird things going on with Kindle listings on Amazon’s website today. Chief among them is Amazon now charging $500 for the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, and it’s not even new—it’s refurbished.
Blue and green ones are priced normally, but you’d have to be whacked out of your gourd to buy the black version of the refurbished Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition right now. And it’s not even some unscrupulous third-party seller that’s doing it; the listing says it’s shipped and sold by Amazon.
The strangeness doesn’t end there. Several older Kindle models are currently listed as “Temporarily out of stock”, but they can be ordered, and the listings say, “Order now and we’ll deliver when available.”
This includes the Kindle Voyage, the Kindle Oasis (the first and third gen models) and even the Kindle Paperwhite 2 and Kindle 5 from many years ago, among others. There’s also a Kindle Touch listed with a picture of pink earbuds for some reason.
There must be some glitch in the system because there’s no way Amazon is going to start selling all these models in new condition again. Some of them have been “temporarily out of stock” for several years now.
But wouldn’t it be funny if Amazon decided to re-release older Kindles instead of releasing new models for 2024. I know some people would be happy with that, especially since Amazon dropped the Kindle Oasis and Kindle Voyage without replacing them with newer versions. Heck, I’d be willing to buy a new Kindle Voyage for $219 without ads, as the listing currently states. And the benefit of getting an older Kindle is they won’t be affected by all the bugs that Amazon introduced with the newer software. 😀
I got rid of all my kindles since Amazon is now deleting all side loaded content. All my books have been constantly deleted from my scribe to my paperwhite, to my oasis, and even on my iOS app. Numerous times.
This isn’t surprising.
Amazon has gone downhill ever since Jeff Bezos left as CEO.
Kindle’s no longer support sideloaded pdfs and e-books? Can we clarify this?
They still support sideloaded books. There’s just a bug that sometimes deletes them if you leave airplane mode on for an extended amount of time.
Yes, I’d love to try a Voyage, since lots of folks here seem to love it. You’ll tell us if this comes true?
Agree. I didn’t get the Oasis because I really don’t like the design but I’d buy the Voyage if it’s ever in stock, even as a refurbished model.
Just saw this post and hit the link to buy the Voyage and see what happens. Unfortunately it is currently unavailable again.
Yeah, they fixed that pretty quickly, but it wasn’t really available anyway even though you could order it. But the $500 Kindle Paperwhite SE still hasn’t been corrected. Somebody must’ve fat fingered something.
