Onyx released the Boox Go 7 Color back in June, a 7″ ereader with page buttons and a color E Ink screen, and now the white version of the Boox Go Color 7 is finally available to purchase on Amazon, and it’s shipping now.
Onyx has been advertising the white version ever since the Boox Go 7 was released in June, but for some reason there was a significant delay getting it out the door.
Aside from being a different color, there’s also one major difference between the white version and the black version. The white version has an indented screen, similar to the Kobo Libra Colour, whereas the black version has a flush front screen.
There’s probably a slight difference in screen clarity and crispness without the added flush layer, but I didn’t notice a big difference comparing the black Go Color 7 with the Kobo Libra Colour. In fact, the screen looks better on the Boox, and the screen door effect seems to be less noticable, but Onyx exaggerates the colors so it’s hard to compare.
As far as 7″ color ereaders go, I feel like the Boox Go Color 7 is one of the best options. It runs Android 12 and can install apps, so it can make better use of the color screen than some other devices like the Kobo Libra Colour, but the Kobo has stylus support and the Boox does not, so that’s a big advantage for Kobo.
The Boox has the edge when it comes to specs, though, with an octa-core CPU, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage space, plus there’s a microSD card slot. It also has a built-in speaker and a mic and it supports text-to-speech to read books aloud.
See my Boox Go Color 7 review for the full list of specs, along with pros and cons, and there’s also a video review of the black version if you want to see it in action.

One thing missing in both this article and the original review is that Go Color 7 is also water resistant. That’s a huge thing because previous models like Leaf or Page were not water resistant. This is honestly pretty much perfect ereader 🙂

It’s not IPX-rated or anything and I’m not sure it would apply to the white version with the indented screen, but Onyx doesn’t specify. It says this at the bottom of their webpage: “The water-repellent design protects against daily water exposure, including accidental spills, splashes, or light rain. It is not intended to be submerged in water, or exposed to high-pressure water, or other liquids. The water-repellent effect may decrease over time. Please note that it is not waterproof.”

Well, what they’re describing means water resistent to me. I just need it to be okay with some rain or accidental water splash in bathroom etc.
Boox Palma in white has indented screen and is “water repellent” so I don’t see why this shouldn’t be when it’s advertised this way 🤷♂️

I just think most devices could be considered water resistant by Onyx’s definition, especially with flush screens where water can’t easily seep through.

Maybe. But they didn’t advertise previous generations as water repellent and they don’t advertise other devices as such… So I guess there might be some hardware difference. Also it might be them just not willing to pay for IPXX certification. From what I read it’s very expensive, that’s why for example Xiaomi smartphones for many years were water resistant but lacked IP68 certification… And Boox doesn’t seem like a company willing to pay for what is not necessary to me :)) I’d love to see iFixit check this out.

I tried the black version for a while two weeks ago and highlights always defaulted to the entire paragraph when starting from the first sentence of a paragraph. Sent it back…
I really wonder why these things still need fixing in 2024
