A chinese company called Bigme recently released a couple of Android-powered E Ink phones, one with a color screen and one with a black and white screen. They started selling the color version on Amazon last month.
Now the BW version of the Bigme Hibreak phone is also available on Amazon. At $269, it’s only $10 less than the color version, which is kind of surprising, but it’s going to have a brighter screen without the added color filter layer, and the color resolution is really low on the color model at only 92 ppi, so this BW version is going to have a better screen for reading.
It has a 5.84″ E Ink screen with a resolution of 1440 x 720, which equates to 275 ppi. There’s also a frontlight, but without temperature control, and it has Bigme’s version of “super refresh technology” for smoother screen refreshing and less ghosting.
The software is based on Android 11 and Google Play is onboard for installing Android apps. There’s also an AI assistant that can be used for a number of things.
The specs appear to be exactly the same as the model with a color display—the screen seems to be the only difference.
The Bigme Hibreak phone is a lot like the Onyx Boox Palma that came out last year and is one of Onyx’s most popular models, except the Palma doesn’t actually function as a phone—it just looks like one. For $10 less the Bigme version adds a SIM card slot, so it looks like a good alternative to the Palma.
There’s a quick video demo of the color version in action on this earlier post: New Bigme Hibreak Phone Released with Color E Ink and Android.
