Yesterday Onyx let the cat out of the bag about a couple new 7″ ereaders that are getting released soon, the Go Color 7 (Gen II) with a color E Ink screen and the Go 7 with a black and white Carta 1300 screen.
It’s only been 10 months since Onyx released the 1st gen Boox Go Color 7 so of course they’re already going to release a newer version—that’s how Onyx does business and it shouldn’t come as a surprise at this point.
Like usual, it looks like they only changed a few minor details, like the design of the page buttons, and they updated the software to a newer version of Android (13 now instead of 12), but everything else appears to be the same. Even the weight and dimensions are identical.
The main difference with these new models is Onyx added stylus support so they now double as mini notebooks. However, Onyx is moving away from using Wacom touchscreens so you have to buy one of their new InkSense styluses, and one isn’t included with these new Go 7 series devices. Most are skeptical about Onyx’s new stylus and there are doubts that it will work as well as Wacom styli, but that remains to be seen. One downside is the they require charging via USB, unlike Wacom pens that don’t require charging at all.
It’s good to see Onyx releasing a black and white version of the Go 7 to go along with the color version, but it’s essentially just a newer version of the Boox Page with a few upgrades and a new name.
The BW Go 7 is going to sell for $249 in the US and $219 elsewhere. It’s available to order from Onyx’s website but it won’t ship for a couple weeks. The color version isn’t available to order yet and they don’t show a price for it yet, but the 1st gen model is selling for $269 so I’d expect a similar price, maybe a little higher.
Keep an eye on Onyx’s Amazon store for these new models to show up.
