While we wait for Amazon to release the three new Kindle Scribes that they announced a month ago, all we have is a few web pages of information to go off of, and I noticed something odd that’s sure to lead to confusion down the line.
Amazon’s Kindle generations have always been a little lacking in the logic department, but that’s bound to happen when a company keeps releasing new devices with the same names over and over again, but now things are starting to reach a new level of befuddlement.
The Kindle Scribe first came out in late 2022. Likewise, that was considered the 1st generation model. That makes sense. But then things get weird with the “new” Kindle Scribe that they released a year ago. Amazon also calls it a 1st generation model, even though there are some minor differences between it and the one that came out in 2022.
They should’ve just called it a 2nd generation model, and maybe they regret not doing so, because now they’re calling the new Kindle Scribe that has yet to be released a 3rd generation model. By Amazon’s own definition, there is no 2nd generation Kindle Scribe—they skipped right over it.
What’s even stranger, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is considered a 1st generation model. It’s the first color Kindle Scribe so apparently that puts it into its own separate category.
So Amazon is releasing two new 3rd generation Kindle Scribes, one with a frontlight and one without, and a 1st generation Kindle Scribe Colorsoft that’s virtually identical to the 3rd gen frontlit model but it has a color E Ink screen instead of a black and white E Ink screen. There is no 2nd gen Kindle Scribe. Yeah, that makes total sense. Nobody is going to get confused by that when trying to find compatible accessories down the line…
