I came across this Kindle Disk Error Troubleshooting page among Amazon’s help articles for Kindles. I don’t remember ever hearing about disk errors being an issue with Kindles, but apparently it happens often enough for them to put up a help page about it.
I thought maybe it was a Windows thing since Windows updates seem to break just about everything at some point or other, but they have directions for Mac OS too.
If your Kindle ever displays disk error code E3 you can do the following to try and fix it, but this only applies to Kindles released prior to 2024 (not counting the Kindle Scribe):
- For Windows: Repair your drives by connecting your Kindle to a computer via USB cable. Click Yes when you see a message asking if you want to repair the Kindle drive.
- For Mac OS: Repair your drives by using Spotlight Search (command + space bar) to find the Disk Utility app. Select your Kindle from the list of devices (it might be called NO NAME) and click First Aid.
If that doesn’t fix the problem, your only recourse is to perform a factory reset, according to the article (that’s pretty much their answer to everything). This will delete all the content from your Kindle and reset it to factory defaults so you’ll have to set it back up again.
To factory reset your Kindle, go to Settings > Device Options > Factory Reset.
If your Kindle gives error code E2, they just say to factory reset it; there isn’t a repair option for Windows and Mac like there is for the pre-2024 models. Apparently this code only applies to Kindle Scribes and Kindles released in 2024 or later.
I’ve never encountered this issue on any of my Kindles. Have you ever had your Kindle show a disk error message?

I have never seen that E2 error code, but I get errors every day when I try to open the Kindle Store on my Kindle Colorsoft after I long press on an eBook and tap “See in Store”. This is after I installed the latest update 5.19.2. Sometimes, it opens the Kindle Store with no problems, but there are more times where it indicates the Application could not be started.
