Get a 7.8-inch Kobo Aura One eReader for $160 USD (Ended)

December 26, 2016 by Nathan

Kobo Aura One

The Kobo Aura One was the best new dedicated ebook reader released in 2016, at least that’s how I feel about it (sorry, Kindle Oasis, but the benefit of the larger screen surpasses your expensive charging cover by a mile).

Now there’s a way you can get the Kobo Aura One at a steep discount. The promotion lasts until December 31st, but it wouldn’t be surprising if they sell out of them before then.

The Aura One is still out of stock from Kobo’s website, but Chapters.Indigo sells them from Canada.

The list price is $249 CAD but you can get 20% off by paying with MasterPass.

That takes the price down to 200 CAD, and if your buying from the US, international shipping costs about $16.60 CAD, so after currency conversion that equates to just over $160 USD at the current rate.

Indigo’s international shipping is very reasonable and very fast, much faster than the estimated delivery times given.

The last two times I ordered a Kobo ereader from them it arrived in less than one week, and that was with shipping to the US.

One thing to be aware of is that most credit cards charge a foreign currency transaction fee, usually like 3% of the purchase, so that can add a few dollars to the price depending on what card you use for MasterPass, which accepts any major credit or debit card.

Check out my Kobo Aura One review for more details about Kobo’s 7.8-inch ereader.

Update: It looks like they are out of stock again already (that was fast). However, the 20% off deal can be used on other products sold by Chapters.Indigo as well, not just the Aura One, and there are other deals too, like $50 off the iPad Mini.

question: I always stick to Kindle because of amazon. or, sometimes Nook because I started with a Nook. I can get gift cards for Amazon/BN from stores and earn fuel pts. does kobo have large selections?

They are one of the major ebook stores so they mostly have the same kind of stuff as Amazon and B&N, at least from the main publishers. You can browse their website to get an idea of the selection. Nobody beats Amazon’s selection but I doubt Kobo’s offerings are much different than other ebook stores overall.

FYI, I’m in the US, and I ordered one on Dec 15. It shipped a week later on Dec 22. Tracking says it will be here on the 29th. Much better than the original Indigo estimate of “by Jan 11.”

I doubt anyone at Kobo knows. They don’t even give a date on when it will return to Canada, their home country.

Thanks for the deal alert, I was one of the lucky ones to catch this deal. This my be a stupid question, but is there any difference in the Canadian and US versions. Like, will it charge correctly with US voltage? Etc…

No worries. They are exactly the same.

Hi Nathan! I am absolutely loving my Kobo Aura One. It is practically perfect in every way. Except for this…the last time I connected my Kobo Aura One to wifi and did a sync, it automatically updated the firmware/software to version 4.2.8283. Since then, my battery has been draining incredibly fast. For example, I charged it up to 100% and unplugged it from the charger before I went to work, left it at home “asleep” all day, then came home from work to find the battery at 10%. And this seems to be happening every day. I’m wondering if you might be having a similar issue with this particular firmware/software version, or if my Kobo Aura One is truly having battery issues. I would really appreciate your input. Thanks so much!

I haven’t gotten that update yet but there’s already a newer one, version 4.2.8432, that hopefully fixes that issue.
