It looks like we now have confirmation that Amazon is about to release a couple of new Kindles for 2024.
What appears to be two new Kindle models turned up on the FCC website earlier this week, product ID number 5698 and 5688.
The FCC paperwork reveals very little information about the upcoming devices, but both models appear to be Kindles. Both are described as an “Electronic Display Device” under the application details. If you go back and look at the FCC filings for the 2022 Kindle and Kindle Scribe it says the exact same thing.
I think Amazon is going to announce the new Kindles on September 24th, but that’s just a guess. In 2022, they announced the new Kindle on the same day that it appeared on the FCC, same with the Kindle Scribe, but apparently their timing didn’t line up this time around.
With the base Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite going in and out of stock all month on multiple Amazon websites, it was pretty obvious that they were getting replaced soon. This just confirms it.
I do think these new Kindles will be a new entry-level model and a new Paperwhite model, but Amazon might surprise us and do something different. A new color model isn’t out of the question, but rumors suggest that color Kindles aren’t coming out until 2025.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Amazon added stylus support to the Kindle Paperwhite like Kobo did with the Libra Colour. Both devices are similar in size and a stylus would add a lot more functionality to the Paperwhite.
If they release a new entry-level model, hopefully it’ll get a warm frontlight upgrade like other Kindles. It’s the only Kindle model with a regular frontlight. Other companies offer warm frontlights on their base models now so Amazon should consider doing the same.
If you’re planning on buying a Kindle soon, you might want to wait a few weeks for the new models to come out, and the older models will probably go on sale on October 8th and 9th during Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days sale.

I’m a very optimistic person…..except when it comes to Amazon’s indifference towards the Kindle.
I hope I am proven wrong and the new models hit it out of the park. 🤞

Unless it has buttons and at least a 7” screen, I’m not interested. A new Paperwhite… deep yawn. Utterly boring.
Gianna says
Same here. No buttons–not buying. Don’t care how great the color could be.
sooperedd says
Agreed. No buttons. No dice. Don’t care about any other features without them.
Robyn Barnett says
Agree. Must have buttons and a 7″ screen or I’ll stick with my 2yr old Oasis.

Amazon has way deeper problems that will not be resolved by a new Kindle release. They need to focus on better software and bug issues.
Norval says
It’s a longshot but it would be nice if buttons came back to Kindle. I love my Voyage but I don’t like reading on it at night.

It’s a shame Amazon is so indifferent to developing new Kindles. If they can’t be bothered to push the technology *at least* as far as Kobo and Onyx then they should be willing to open up their bookstore so people can choose to read on the best readers out there.

It’s interesting how people routinely complain about Amazon not pushing things. They said the same thing just before the 11th gen of kindles came out which were a big leap in progress for Kindles. And we are here again with people complaining that kindles are just not advanced enough. Just interesting how this is a pattern. Rather than wait and see what they have up their sleeve, people are just jumping the gun and assuming the worst.
Rick says
Amazon is not pushing things. This is not about releasing a new Kindle with a bigger screen or better materials. This is about constant issues Amazon has with software and bugs.
Rod says
I have seen other brands also have issues, no different from Amazon. I see a lot of complaints of screens breaking with some Boox models, along with software issues. But everyone one wants the greener grass in the other side of the fence.
fx says
11th gen was a big meh. Light years behind their competition. So yeah, they’re not pushing things. Competitors have page-turn buttons, colour displays, magnetic cases, speakers… While Amazon does nothing.
Jay says
Amazon has fallen way behind the competition in the last decade. At one time, they were the Industry leader. now they can’t even be bothered to follow.
If they can’t embrace colour and what readers *actually* want on an eReader, why bother with them? Adding some extra LEDS, and making the screen bigger? That’s not new. It’s not really iterative anymore. Boox, Kobo, Pocketbook are leading the charge now. Amazon has a lot of catching up to do. And unless they start catching up, they are going to become yesterday’s news.

I’m happy with the kindle paperwhite as far as functionality. My only issue, not really an issue, but more of a pet peeve, is that the bezel has gotten so small it’s just super uncomfortable to hold for any period of time so I end up having to prop it up.
Which leads me into a would-be-nice-to-have request. Apparently, there are a lot of people that like to prop their e-Readers up or use a stand, so I would absolutely love to see a small remote, maybe with a silicone finger hole to loop it on your finger, that would allow Bluetooth forward and back page turns so when propped up or on a stand…voilà! Pure lazy at its finest. 😁
