A couple weeks ago I posted about the AiPaper Reader from Viwoods, a new phone-sized ereader with an E Ink Carta 1300 screen that runs Android 16, and it’s now on sale for Black Friday, along with Viwoods’ eNotes.
The AiPaper Reader is now marked down to $237.99 on Amazon. The regular price is $279.99. Unfortunately a Prime membership is required to get the sale price, but you can usually sign-up for a free trial if you don’t already have Prime.
I’m tempted by this deal. It would make a good portable ereader, and apparently it can be used as a phone with some networks, notably T-Mobile. It’s lacking a couple of things, including a warm frontlight and an external speaker, but it has a 6.13″ 300 ppi E Ink screen, and it’s supposedly the lightest ereader on the current market at 138 grams. Here’s a review of the AiPaper Reader that I found on reddit with some additional details.
Viwoods’ larger eNotes are on sale as well, and they don’t require a Prime membership to get the discount. The 8.2″ AiPaper Mini is marked down to $364 from $429 and the 10.65″ AiPaper is on sale for $469, down from $549.
Both have unusual screen sizes for eNotes, and the larger model has a Mobius screen, which is lighter and more durable than standard glass-backed E Ink screens. You don’t see them very often anymore, as they tend to be more expensive.
I’ve never reviewed any Viwoods models so I can’t give any advice about buying them, but there are a surprising number of reviews on Amazon (there’s over 150 for these two eNotes combined, with an average rating of about 4-stars). Maybe at least some of them aren’t fake.
Unfortunately the AiPaper Reader doesn’t support stylus input. Considering Viwoods other devices are eNotes you’d think it would support notetaking as well, but that’s not the case, at least not handwritten notes. The new Boox Palma 2 Pro supports using a stylus, but it’s a lot more expensive, and it’s only available with a color E Ink screen.
