Kindle Trade-in Promo Bonus Takes Extra $50 off Kindle Paperwhite

October 16, 2017 by Nathan Groezinger

Kindle Paperwhite Trade In

I was browsing the Kindle section of Amazon’s website today and noticed a new banner (pictured above) for the Amazon Trade-in program where you can get an extra $50 off the purchase of a WiFi Kindle Paperwhite with Special Offers by trading in your old Kindle.

The banner says get up to $75 off but as far as I can tell their math doesn’t make any sense.

By trading in an old Kindle, you get a $50 trade-in bonus toward the purchase of a new Kindle Paperwhite, plus an Amazon gift card for the value of your trade-in.

The terms and conditions clearly state you can combine the bonus with the trade-in gift card and there’s nothing about a $75 limit so it could easily be more than that.

Some of the Kindle trade-in values are higher than $25. The 1st gen Paperwhite’s value is $35 for example, so is the 2nd gen.

With all other Kindle models, including the new Kindle Oasis, the Kindle trade-in bonus is $20. That’s not new; they’ve been running that promotion all year.

This is the first time I’ve seen Amazon offer a $50 bonus trade-in deal. According to the fine print, the offer runs through October 31st, 2017. Once the trade-in is accepted, it says the price of the $119 Kindle Paperwhite will automatically be reduced to $69 during checkout. See the promo details page for more info:

If I’m reading this right, I can trade in my 2011 Kindle Touch for $10, + $20 credit + $50 off the PW, making the new PW $39.00. That’s a deal I can’t refuse!

No, the $20 credit is for the other Kindles, $50 for the Paperwhite, is how I understand it. But they certainly don’t do a good job of making it clear. I still don’t understand the $75 off they’re talking about.

I see now that you are correct.

Sounds like a shelf clearing move….making way for new product.

A new Paperwhite Voyage hybrid with audio support would make sense on a number of levels…

My Kindle Keyboard (3rd Generation) in perfect condition seems to be worth a mere $10. No different from what I’ve seen there before. I’ll pass.

Nevermind…. I see that when one continues on with the process they say another $20 could be added. That might be worth doing.

I cancelled my trade in. A new PW for $39 would be great, but not for $59, as I already have a Voyage. I just wanted to play around with the new firmware (not putting it on my hacked Voyage).

It appears that the Paperwhite deal is simply an early Black Friday discount. Normally the discount on Black Friday is $30. The $50 they are offering equates to that plus the $20 bonus discount.

I was hoping to use the $50 discount on black friday for a total $80 off (assuming the same BF pricing), but I read in the fine print that the $50 paperwhite deal reduces the price to $69 in your cart.

I chatted with their customer service. It’s kind of unclear, but if I’m correct, the total discount can be up to $75 for a new Kindle Paperwhite (using the gift card is optional and probably you can apply only up to $25 of your gift card towards the new Kindle and keep the rest).
