Amazon has started a new trade-in promotion to get a discount on the purchase of a new Kindle when trading in an old one.
You get the value of the trade in the form of an Amazon gift card, plus a 25% discount on a new Kindle ereader.
They used to offer a $20 trade-in bonus so this new promotion is considerably better unless you’re buying the basic Kindle.
They also offered $50 off before but that applied to the WiFi Kindle Paperwhite only.
This new offer is open to all current Kindles models, including the new Kindle Oasis. That means you could get a significant discount when trading in an old Kindle, and it doesn’t even have to work to get the 25% off credit.
Depending on which model you choose, you can get up to $87.50 off (25% of $350).
The terms say the discount can only be used once and it can’t be combined with other offers, so waiting for the next sale is unlikely to work, but the discount is better than usual for the more expensive models, especially since the Kindle Oasis never goes on sale and the Voyage rarely goes on sale.
If you have an old Kindle laying around that you don’t want to use anymore this is a good way to get rid of it and upgrade to a newer model for 25% off the regular price.

I hope they are still running a trade in deal when the new Paperwhite comes out.
Nathan says
A new Kindle is very unlikely anytime soon considering E Ink just told investors earlier this month that they expect sales of ereader displays to be down for the next few months.
vrf says
unless it’s not an e-ink display… 🙂
drew says
Does anyone know if this is true?
And if they are getting rid of the Voyage, I hope they incorporate its best features into the new Paperwhite — flush screen, page turn “buttons,” etc.

I have a feeling that link will be taken down in 3…2….1….
Nathan says
Yep! Websites that make false reports and present them as fact shouldn’t be perpetuated. I’m surprised they didn’t say it’s getting released on Mother’s Day like the other time they made up this story.
Nathan says
Even without reading the article I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt the latest Kindle Paperwhite 4 rumor has no truth to it whatsoever. It’s just a guess based on no facts. That website has a long history of making up stories and blatantly lying just to get clicks (and that’s why I removed the link). They do a lot worse than that too, like taking people’s money in crowdfunding campaigns and not delivering the product and refusing to offer refunds. They also used to sell pirated ebooks and they’ve done a number of other shady things to get people’s money over the years.
drew says
Thanks for the reply! And sorry about posting the link. I did not know that website was shady. I think I’ll just stay here for my ereader news 🙂

I have an old Kindle Fire, the first tablet/e-reader I owned. I would gladly trade it in, but Amazon isn’t offering. But as it was a gift, I shouldn’t complain.
Nathan says
They have a separate 25% off trade-in deal for Fire tablets. It looks like they accept all models.
Reader says
I would get $5 for it. Which means it will stay on my shelf, unused. But as it was a gift, no problem.
RL says
With Amazon having all these promotions, it makes me wonder why B&N isn’t offering anything.
It makes me wish the trade-in promotion included Nook readers and tablets as well.
Nathan says
Things have been quiet with the Nook lately. You’d think B&N would run more promotions. They put it on sale last fall for the holidays right after it was released but it hasn’t been on sale since. Right now they have a 15% off code on their website but like always they make sure to say the Nook is excluded. I don’t get it. That’s only $18 off the Glowlight 3. What’s so bad about that? It’s still $12 higher than they were selling it for during the holidays.
Peter says
To bad for me. I was ready to upgrade but my original Paperwhite was not listed as being acceptable for trade-in.
Nathan says
What do you mean? It shows it’s worth $5 even if it doesn’t work and the screen is cracked, $25 in working condition.
Peter says
The original Paperwhite? I’m assuming it’s Generation 1 and I saw no Generation 1 Paperwhite listed. I sure would like to upgrade! Maybe I’m not looking in the right place.
Nathan says
It’s listed as Kindle Paperwhite 5th generation because it was the 5th gen Kindle.
jake says
I bought cracked Kindle keyboard on ebay by $6 and traded-in to get $5 and bought a new oasis lol
Nathan says
Nice. 😀 It’s a great way to get rid of broken Kindles. Better than throwing them away, at least.
Peter says
Thanks Nathan. I tried to read the model number on the back but no luck.
Mark F says
Does anyone know if the 25% off applies to refurbished kindles?
Nathan says
It does not.
Erich says
Does anyone know if I can still make the monthly payment plan with the 25% off?
