Kindle Trade-In Time – Planning for Prime Day 2024

June 22, 2024 by Nathan Groezinger 1 Comment

Kindle Trade Values

Prime Day is coming up in July, and it’s the best time of year to buy Kindles at the lowest prices, and you can also trade-in an old Kindle to get an even better deal.

If you have an old Kindle that you don’t use anymore, now is a good time to start thinking about trading it in if you want to buy a new Kindle during Prime Day and get an extra 20% off the sale price.

I’ve always gotten the 20% off credit immediately when initiating the trade, but some people like to send their Kindle in ahead of time and then use the discount credit afterward. You have 45 days to send in your old Kindle after initiating a trade, and I think you’re limited to one trade-in every 3 months when it comes to Kindles.

With Amazon’s trade-in program, you get a credit for trading in an old Kindle and then you also get 20% off when buying a new Kindle.

You can even take advantage of this deal if your old Kindle is broken. Amazon will still give you $5 for it, plus 20% off the purchase of a new Kindle, so that’s one good way to get rid of broken Kindles.

Trade-In Values

Trade-in values are only $5 for a lot of the older models so they might not be worth trading in. For instance, the Kindle Voyage is only worth $5 via trade-in these days; you could get a lot more by selling it elsewhere if you wanted to, but the extra 20% off has to be taken into account as well (for example, the 64GB Kindle Scribe sells for $420 so 20% off would be $84, although the price will be less during Prime Day sales). I used to post trade-in values for all Kindles but then Amazon changed the format of the page so it’s difficult to find every Kindle model now unless they’re registered to your account. It looks like the first and second gen Kindles are no longer accepted; I don’t see them on the list at all anymore.

The 2019 Kindle Oasis has a trade-in value of $50, and the 2021 Kindle Paperwhite has a value of $30, and it looks like the previous generation Paperwhite from 2018 is also worth $30 via trade-in. The 2019 Kindle is still worth $20, but for some reason the 2022 Kindle isn’t showing up on the list for me right now, even though one is registered to my account. Pretty much all the older Kindles are only worth $5. Check the trade-in page to see how much Amazon will give you for your old Kindle.

The trade-in page is listing my 2012 Kindle 2 with 3G (no wifi) for a $5 trade-in. Since side loading is now the only way to get books onto it now that 3G is dead everywhere, maybe I will.
