It looks like Onyx is getting ready to release a new 6″ ebook reader soon called the Boox Go 6. Some paperwork turned up on the FCC a few days ago for a new device called the Go 6, so it’ll be the third new model in Onyx’s Go Series.
Onyx just started the Go Series a couple months ago with the release of the Boox Go Color 7 and the Boox Go 10.3. Neither of those two devices really have much in common, so it’ll be interesting to see how the Boox Go 6 fits in.
Onyx currently only sells one 6″ model, the Boox Poke 5, which was released back in May of 2023, but it was basically a re-release of the Poke 3 from 2020 with a few minor changes. The Go 6 is most likely a replacement for the Poke 5.
The Boox Palma also has a 6.13″ screen, but with a narrower screen ratio so it’s more like a phone than an ereader. It came out over a year ago so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Onyx release an updated version of it soon as well. If any device should be apart of the “Go Series” it should be the Palma.
Like usual, most of the pertinent information and pictures are hidden of the FCC website for confidentiality reasons, so we don’t have access to any specific details about the new device yet. There’s just a nondescript photo of the back. You can’t tell much from that, but it definitely has a standard ereader shape, not like the narrower phone-shaped Palma.
Sometimes it takes several months for a new device to get released after the FCC paperwork gets filed, but Onyx released the Go 7 Color and Go 10.3 right after they showed up on the FCC so the Boox Go 6 might be available a few weeks from now.
It’ll be interesting to see if Onyx sells it from their official Amazon store. They didn’t used to sell their smaller models on Amazon at all, and they never sold the Poke 5 on Amazon, but they do sell the Go Color 7 there now so maybe they’ll do the same with the Go 6.
Sigh. Waiting for a Go 8 to replace my 7.8 Tab Mini C, which is too heavy to Go.
Is there any official announcement or timeline set that’s more specific than “soon”? I like the look of their products, but am wary of purchasing one with their older versions of Android, lest my apps get obsolesced sooner. I’m hoping a new release will come with a newer OS.
It’s been available from B&H for a while now. Apparently they aren’t going to sell it on Amazon because Onyx is weird that way.
