Amazon has officially released a new basic Kindle for 2024. This is a summary of all known details so far, and I’ll be posting a full review soon.
This latest Kindle is almost exactly the same as the previous 2022 model, but it comes with a few modest upgrades. Amazon says the frontlight is 25% brighter at the max setting, and they claim the screen has a higher contrast ratio, with faster page turns than the previous generation.
This new Kindle is also available in a new matcha green color, and there’s still black as well, but they did away with the denim blue color from the 2022 model.
The 2024 Kindle lacks a warm frontlight, it’s not waterproof like the Paperwhite, and it still has a 6″ 300 ppi E Ink screen like before, so not much has really changed. They do mention better contrast and smoother page turns so it’s probably using a newer Carta 1300 screen from E Ink, but Amazon doesn’t specify.
One positive of Amazon not changing much is the fact that the dimensions are the same as the 2022 model so 11th gen covers should fit, but on the other hand there really isn’t much of a reason to upgrade if you already have a 2022 model—upgrading to a Paperwhite would make more sense. In fact, Amazon is still referring to this model as 11th generation, the same as the 2022 model, which doesn’t make sense so maybe it’s an error.
The new 2024 Kindle is available to order on Amazon and it’s shipping now—no pre-orders this time. The price has gone up by $10 so it’s now $109 for the ad-supported version and $129 for the version without lockscreen ads (which also removes the requirement to swipe the screen to turn the Kindle on).
Amazon is also selling a new Kindle Kids Edition bundle for the 2024 Kindle. It’s the exact same Kindle; it just comes with a cover (there are three different designs), a better warranty, and a 1-year subscription to Amazon Kids+. It sells for $129.99. Once again it’s only available in black, as if kids wouldn’t want the green color.
