Over at MobileRead, there’s a thread about a new jailbreak method called WinterBreak that claims to work with any Kindle on any firmware, at least from the Kindle 5 and up.
All that is required to jailbreak is a PC, a registered Kindle, and a valid WiFi network to connect your Kindle to.
Every time a new Kindle jailbreak comes along, I have big plans of trying to jailbreak one of my Kindles for the first time ever, and then I inevitably put it off because it looks complicated and then I never end up doing it.
This new jailbreaking method actually looks really simple and the directions are easy to follow this time, but it’s the other hacks and stuff that you can install on a jailbroken Kindle that are complicated. Everything is scattered all over the place, and most the time the directions read like their written in a different language because software devs don’t know what it’s like to be a regular person without any software and coding knowledge.
Nonetheless, if you want to jailbreak your Kindle to add more features and to take away some of Amazon’s control over your device, then you might want to check out the new WinterBreak Jailbreak.
Some people like to install KOReader on jailbroken Kindles to add an alternative reading app that supports EPUB and other common formats, with more formatting options and features than the stock Kindle reader app.
If I can figure out how to get rid of the stupid screensaver ads on a jailbroken Kindle I’ll give it a try because I’m so sick of forking over more money to Amazon for nothing. I’ve already paid to remove ads like 5 times on different Kindles and I refuse to do it again—it’s just a waste of money, especially when you paid full price for the Kindle to begin with.
According to the thread at MobileRead, the WinterBreak jailbreak works with the new Kindles for 2024, including the Kindle Colorsoft, which is kind of surprising considering Amazon hasn’t even released any software updates for the Colorsoft yet.
Amazon will most likely kill the loophole that makes this new jailbreak method possible with the next round of software updates, so you might want to put your Kindle in airplane mode if you plan on using this jailbreak in the near future.

Don’t worry, I’m an experienced software engineer and sometimes I have trouble following these instructions too 😂

I have a “with ads” jailbroken Kindle PW5 with KOReader installed. A “Nightly” (i.e. Development) version of KOReader. When suspending from KOReader I can choose to see book covers if desired. There are other options. I see no ads.

That sounds nice.
