If you’ve been experiencing problems with your Kobo ereaders and Kobo apps syncing properly across multiple devices and apps, there’s now a solution that supposedly fixes the issue, according to a series of posts on social media by Kobo’s CEO.
Here’s a quote about the change:
We rebuilt the entire bookmarking and progress syncing system from the ground up. The old one hails back to our earliest days of making ereaders and it was in a scary part of the code that no one wanted to touch. But intrepid engineers strapped on the miner’s helmets, packed snacks and energy drinks, and went deep into Kobo’s syncing infrastructure and rebuilt big pieces of it from scratch.
However, it sounds like the fix doesn’t happen automatically so you have to do a few things to make it work. You’d think an update could remedy the problem, but apparently that’s not the case.
To fix syncing issues on a Kobo ereader, go to Settings > Device information > Repair your Kobo account.
To fix syncing problems with a Kobo app, you have to sign out and then sign back in again. You can do the same on Kobo ereaders and that will fix the problem as well, but it’s faster to use the repair option.
You have to do that on all the Kobo devices/apps that you’re trying to sync. Then they should be good to go moving forward.
When I first heard about Kobo reworking their syncing system, I thought maybe they were finally going to add the option to sync sideloaded ebooks, but unfortunately that’s not the case. This fix is strictly for syncing purchased Kobo ebooks, and I’d assume library ebooks and Kobo Plus ebooks.
