Over the weekend, the new Boox Picco turned up for sale on Onyx’s official Amazon Store, as reports have started surfacing about Onyx now shipping their new mini ereader.
The listing on Amazon is already sold out, unfortunately, but you can keep an eye on that page for the next batch to show up. I’m just glad to see they’re actually going to sell the Picco on Amazon—with Onyx you never know.
The price was $109 with free shipping while it was still available, so at least they aren’t jacking up the price on their Amazon store. In fact, it’s cheaper than buying from Onyx directly because they charge extra for shipping.
The stock software looks like it’s going to be pretty limited, and it requires using an app or website to transfer files to the Picco since it doesn’t support standard formats—everything has to be converted to a new format, which is a terrible idea. Fortunately, the Boox Picco does support installing CrossPoint, an alternate open source software that’s popular with Xteink’s mini ereaders.
With the frontlight and touchscreen, the Boox Picco is a lot like the Xteink X4 Pro, except it’s a bit smaller, and the Picco has an indented screen instead of a flush screen, and it adds a USB-C port.
One interesting detail I noticed about the listing, the description indicates the frontlight has a color temperature of 2800-6300k. That’s the first time I’ve seen that mentioned with any ereader. It would be cool if they started to standardize frontlight temperatures to make them more consistent. I posted about that very thing a few months ago: Why Don’t Frontlights Use Standard Warm and Cool Light Temperatures?
