A few months ago Viwoods released a couple of new Android-powered eNotes, one with a 10.65″ E Ink Mobius screen and one with an 8.2″ E Ink Carta screen.
The larger model, the 10″ AiPaper, turned up for sale a couple months ago on Amazon, and now the smaller AiPaper Mini is available to purchase on Amazon as well. Both currently have $50 off coupons to entice buyers.
The AiPaper Mini has a unique screen size for an E Ink device at 8.2″. The resolution is listed as 1920 x 1440, which equates to 292.68 ppi (they say it has 297 ppi, but the math doesn’t add up given the advertised screen size and resolution).
Unlike the larger model that features one of E Ink’s rare flexible Mobius screens, the AiPaper Mini uses a regular glass-backed Carta screen. In fact, they say it uses a “Carta 1000″ screen, which is odd since that’s an older version, with Carta 1300 being the latest.
One big difference with the Mini model is it adds a frontlight, a welcome change since the larger 10” model doesn’t have a light at all, but it sounds like the frontlight lacks temperature control.
According to the spec sheet, it has 128GB of internal storage space and 4GB of RAM, like the larger model. It’s powered by a 2.0GHz octa-core CPU, and it has a 2450 mAh battery. The weight is listed at 230 grams.
The software is based on Android 13 and it’s open to installing apps. It sounds like there’s a way to add Google Play based on some reports, but it’s not officially supported.
It’s interesting how many different new eNotes are hitting the market from different companies lately. The same cannot be said about the ereader market, where it seems like everyone but the long-established players have given up trying. Is notetaking really that much more popular than reading?
