Onyx is in the midst of releasing a new software update, version 4.1, for Boox eNotes and ereaders, and some of the new features and UI tweaks look pretty interesting.
Onyx uploaded a video to their YouTube channel showing some of the changes. Watching the video, it’s hard not to notice all the different features and settings Boox devices offer that Kindles and Kobos lack—Onyx has some flaws, but their software development is on a different level.
So far the V4.1 software has officially been released for the Boox Note Air4 C, the Boox Go 7 BW and the 2nd gen Go Color 7. It’s available in Beta for some other newer models too, including the Note Max and Tab X C. Onyx is pretty good about releasing updates for older models too, so there’s still hope for other devices as well, but it can take quite a while for the updates to come out sometimes.
If your Boox device notifies you about the software update, make sure to read through the directions and make any backups, if necessary. Onyx does updates in batches and they don’t offer update downloads online so you might not want to put the update off for too long or you could lose access to it. You can usually contact Onyx to get the update again, so it’s not a big deal if you miss it.
Firmware Update V4.1 Changes
Among the changes to the new V4.1 software, they revamped the settings menu for PDFs to easily switch between different views, with the option to setup themes to fit the layout of specific types of PDF files. Onyx has long offered a plethora of settings for PDFs that other devices lack, and it’s good to see them still refining things now.
They also simplified the text selection toolbar and made it so you can customize the icons that appear on it, with a new option to select an area for OCR. The reading time estimate bar is now customizable as well.
They added a local book backup option that can restore or transfer book files between Boox devices, with notes, annotations, and reading themes saved.
Boox’s notetaking app got some updates as well, with some new customizable options, some new pens, a floating lasso toolbar, and something called Infinite Notes that lets you expand the size of the note page beyond the viewing area of the page.
They added some new E Ink themes as well to make it easier to use different settings with different apps, and there are new frontlight modes too.
