KOReader Gets Stylus Support on Kobo Devices

February 6, 2026 by Nathan Groezinger Leave a Comment

Kobo KOReader Stylus

KOReader is a popular alternative reading app that runs on a number of E Ink devices, including Kobos, Pocketbooks, jailbroken Kindles, Android devices, and others.

It’s the kind of app that offers a ton of features, and now there’s a new plugin called pencil.koplugin that adds stylus support for Kobo’s ereaders. The plugin is still in the early stages of development so don’t expect it to work as well as the native Kobo app, but it’s nice to see KOReader finally getting in-book stylus support on some level.

According to the description, the plugin works with ebooks in EPUB format. It supports writing, erasing, and undoing the last stroke. Annotations are saved on a per-book basis. So far there isn’t a way to export them, but that’s listed as something in the works for the future, along with colored annotations.

The plugin specifically mentions the Kobo Stylus 2 as being supported, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work Kobo’s first gen stylus or aftermarket styli that use the same MPP tech.

The plugin only works with Kobo devices. It has been tested with the Kobo Libra Colour, but it should work with the Kobo Sage and Kobo Elipsa as well since they both support the Kobo stylus.

Check the plugin page at GitHub for the download link and the full list of directions if you want to test it out yourself. It looks promising for those that want to be able to use a stylus to annotate EPUBs while using KOReader.
