Over on Amazon’s website, the 64GB version of the Kindle Scribe is listed as “currently unavailable”, and the page says, “We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock.”
Some people will inevitably jump to the conclusion that that means the Kindle Scribe is about to be discontinued for a newer model, but I think it’s more likely they’re just temporarily out of stock after Prime Day, so they put up the “currently unavailable” placeholder until they get more in stock.
But sometimes that can indicate a Kindle model is about to be discontinued—that’s exactly what happened to the Kindle Oasis a couple months before it was officially discontinued.
I started thinking about it, and while it is unlikely that Amazon would release a new Kindle Scribe after just 2 years, it isn’t entirely out of the question, especially considering the Scribe is a first generation model.
Maybe there are some things they want to improve, or there’s a change they can make that they think will increase sales or decrease production costs. Either way, Amazon releasing a new Kindle Scribe in 2024 really wouldn’t be that surprising.
Most other eNote companies offer models with color E Ink screens, but if Amazon were going to release a color Kindle Scribe they wouldn’t need to replace the black and white version, unless there are some changes they’d like to make to make both models the same otherwise.
Earlier this year, there was a rumor going around about Amazon releasing a color Kindle in 2025, but the rumor said Amazon would be using E Ink’s better color screen technology instead of the Kaleido 3 screens that all the other color E Ink devices are currently using.
That seems pretty far-fetched, and even if it was true, they could’ve run into complications with the newer screen technology, and maybe they decided to use existing screens instead. If that were the case, then there wouldn’t be any reason to wait until 2025. Or maybe things are moving ahead of schedule.
For some reason Amazon seems really intent on taking on the eNote market. The Kindle Scribe is the least expensive 10″ eNote available, especially when it’s on sale, which seems like more often than not. And Kindle software updates have been focused almost entirely on improving the Kindle Scribe since it was released; other Kindles barely get any attention anymore.
I thought Amazon would have deep discounts on the Kindle Paperwhite for Prime Day since it will be turning 3 years old soon, and that’s when they tend to come out with a newer model, but that didn’t happen. Maybe it’s the always-on-sale Kindle Scribe that’s getting replaced instead. After all, Amazon seems to have forgotten that other Kindles exist since it came along.

Well, I wish they would be interested in selling it at all here in Mexico. But, maybe the fact that they have not expanded into Mexico and other countries might be that they are considering a new version? Maybe the Scribe 1 was a test to see if this was a viable market for them? At this point, the way to get a kindle here in Mexico is either have someone bring it from the USA or actually purchase it through the other online store called Mercado Libre, which only sells the 16 GB version. But at least they are selling it. Mercado Libre is the competitor to Amazon and Ebay. No bidding, just people and small businesses selling things. Generally more expensive than Amazon. Sometime they have things Amazon doesn’t have.

After I posted I though that if Amazon did sell a Scribe 2, would I get one? Probably not, unless it had some really huge must have features. If it came in color maybe for my wife as she would have more use for a color one than I would.

I don’t think there will be another Scribe 2 this year. The current Kindle Scribe is OK in terms of hardware, but the software (I mean note taking) is just way behind Onyx Boox.or SuperNote.

I hesitated on buying the scribe for over a year, and once I got it loved it. What a beautiful screen!! I am content with this model.
