It’s been over two months now since Amazon first announced that they would be releasing three new Kindle Scribes, including the first one with a color E Ink screen, and now we finally have a release date for two of them.
Amazon’s website now says the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft and BW Kindle Scribe will be getting released on December 10th, 2025. Neither are available to order just yet, but I’m sure that will change soon.
The Kindle Scribe without a frontlight still does not show a release date, but Amazon said that it wouldn’t be getting released until early next year when they announced it so it looks like it’s still TBD.
Amazon UK still doesn’t show a release date for the new Kindle Scribes, but Amazon said all three models would be available in the UK and Germany early next year so it does indeed look like they’ll arrive in the US first.
The new Kindle Scribes feature a thinner design with smaller bezels and a larger 11″ E Ink screen with texture-molded glass and a revamped frontlight system. They come with a faster processor too.
The Colorsoft model has a Kaleido 3 color E Ink screen similar to the Kindle Colorsoft that was released last year. It’ll be the first color notetaking Kindle.
The new Kindle Scribes come with some software improvements as well (hopefully Amazon will release an update soon to bring the new features to the older models too). There’s a new home screen layout with a Quick Notes section for jotting down ideas without having to open a notebook. They’re adding new color pen types and shading tools, and AI-powered search. Amazon is even adding support for Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, with the ability to share notebooks with OneNote.
It’s nice to finally get a release date for the new Kindle Scribes. Amazon used to always accept pre-orders right away after announcing new Kindles, but they made us wait a couple months this time for some reason.

For that outrageous price let’s hope they finally fixed the poor contrast issues that plagued the first two generations.
I didn’t notice any contrast issues at all… what I did notice was the uniform screen and lighting – aeons above the latest kindle paperwhite which is interesting considering the size and dimensions of the old scribe(s).
I have the original and it has great contrast.
I also have the first and second generation Kindle Scribes. You say it has great contrast? Great contrast compared to what? If you compare it to the latest Paperwhite or a Kindle Voyage or a Kobo Clara BW and especially the Kobo Libra 2, then you’ll definitely realize that the Scribes have very poor contrast.
The first-gen Scribe that came out four years ago has similar contrast to the previous version of the Paperwhite, which was excellent. The new Paperwhite is a smidge higher contrast, but you’d really only notice if you were comparing side-by-side. I’ll be curious to compare the new B&W Scribe vs. the current Paperwhite. Also curious about how the new Colorsoft Scribe compares to the Colorsoft itself.
Completely disagree. Scribes have the worst contrast of any lighted Kindles. This was very apparent as soon as I turned it on before I started doing side-by-side comparisons. And I’m not talking slightly worse, but significantly worse contrast.
I do not know the latest PW generation, but my Scribe (2nd gen. also had the first gen) is on par with the PW generation before that, or the Oasis.
Neither can compete with the trusty Voyage – are you saying the latest PW is as good as the Voyage?
I can’t get past what they are charging for the devices and the covers. I am still shocked at what the cost is for the one without a front light. It will be interesting to see the reviews and the number of people buying them.
You can’t get past what they’re charging because they’re at least $100 cheaper than other devices that use the same underlying display? Yeah, it’s crazy how scale lowers prices. I doubt Amazon will sell a ton of these, but color eInk notebooks are a pretty niche market overall.
Hopefully I can get a trade in on my existing Scribe!
The issue is that this product is not available in the UK. It was released to the US audience on 10 December 2025, yet 10 January 2026 has already passed and the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is still unavailable to the UK market. Despite this delay, there is no clear information from Google searches or official sources about whether or when it will be launched in the UK, which makes it a worthwhile topic to cover and clarify through dedicated content.
It’s still basically unavailable the US too. You can order it, but shipping is like a month away, and that’s how it’s been since was released. The sales numbers aren’t even very high so they must not have had very many available at all. It’s a weird way to launch a new product that people are questionable about to begin with.
