It’s the first day of the new year and Amazon already has some Kindles on sale, and Kindle covers and accessories are still being discounted by 20-30% from the last sale.
Right now the 16GB Kindle Colorsoft is marked down to $199 from $249, and the Kindle Colorsoft Kids bundle is $219, down from $269.
Both are the exact same Kindle, but the kids bundle includes a cover, an upgraded 2-year warranty, and it comes with a 12-month subscription to Amazon Kids+, which is a library of content for kids (it’s kind of like Kindle Unlimited for kids).
Update: At some point after posting this article, Amazon put the basic Kindle on sale too. It’s $89 for both the black and matcha colors, which is $20 off the regular price.
It’s interesting to see the upgraded Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition isn’t on sale at all; it’s still full price at $279. Having to pay $80 more just for wireless charging, an auto-brightness sensor, and more storage space is asking a lot, especially when the price difference is usually only $30.
Oddly, the Colorosoft bundles aren’t on sale either. It’s cheaper to buy the Colorsoft on its own and an Amazon cover separately. Amazon’s Colorsoft cases are still 20-30% off from the last sale, and they’re even cheaper in used condition.
One good thing about the Colorsoft models is they don’t have ads on the lockscreen like the Paperwhite and basic Kindle so you don’t pay an extra $20 to get rid of the advertisements, which is nice. I guess it’s too much trouble to have color ads for color Kindles when black and white Kindles have black and white ads. Either way, they should just get rid of the annoying ads entirely.
I wonder how long it will take for Amazon to put the new Kindle Scribe Colorsoft on sale? I’m guessing it’ll happen by the end of next month if they can actually get more than a few hundred in stock. Shipping is still over 3 weeks out when ordering now, so it might take a little longer for them to get enough in stock to have a sale.
