Amazon Marketing New Kindles as Pocketable is a Stretch

October 14, 2026 by Nathan Groezinger Leave a Comment

Kindle Pocket

One of Amazon’s marketing points regarding the new 6″ Kindles for 2026 is the claim that they are pocketable. They even have pictures on the product page showing people putting a new Kindle in the back pocket of their pants.

There’s a caption that goes along with the pictures that reads: “A library in your pocket – Kindle holds thousands of books, weighs less than a paperback, and slips easily into a purse, pocket, tote, or carry-on, so your next read is ready for commutes, cafés, and every gate along the way.”

I went back and looked at the product pages for the previous three 6″ Kindles, and Amazon did not market them as being pocketable. They advertised them as being portable, and show people sticking them in bags, but the pocketable angle is new.

It’s curious timing to start advertising that all of a sudden when mini reading devices like Xteink’s ereaders are taking off; Amazon is surely looking to capitalize on the pocketable angle without having to put in the work of creating their own mini Kindle.

The new Kindle for 2026 is a bit smaller than previous gen models, but it still has a 6″ screen and it’s not that much smaller.

The Xteink X4 Pro is less than half the size of the 2026 Kindle with it’s 4.3″ screen (and it even has a warm frontlight). The Xteink X3 is smaller still with its 3.7″ E Ink screen. Now those are true pocketable ereaders; some people like to stick them on the back of their phones.

I think it’s a bit of a stretch to claim that Kindles are pocketable.

Yeah, you can fit a Kindle in a pocket, but it’s not exactly going to be comfortable unless your pockets are huge, and the Kindle is at a much greater risk of breaking if you put it in your back pocket and forget and sit on it (it’s surprising that Amazon is even suggesting that, without a case no less). That’s how my Kindle Voyage’s screen broke, after years of getting away with it without issue, but a hard, uneven surface got me (and it was in a case).

Because of that, I always carry my Xteink ereaders in my front pockets now, without anything else to damage them (they also seem more fragile than Kindles, being so small and thin).

I’ve been carrying around a new Kindle in my front pocket when I go for walks lately, temporarily displacing my Xteink X4 Classic, to see if the new Kindle really is pocketable or not.

I do get annoyed with the Kindle stretching the seams of my pocket, and frankly, it’s unsightly, but I sort of get used to it after a while. So I guess technically the new Kindles are pocketable to some extent, but I’d much rather carry the smaller X4 around—I can barely tell it’s there. Amazon really should get busy and release a truly pocketable Kindle.
