Latest Buggy Kindle Update Causing Widespread Problems

February 27, 2026 by Nathan Groezinger 18 Comments

Kindle Colorsoft Highlights

Ever since Amazon released the latest 5.19.2 software update for Kindles last week, there have been a number of reports of various problems cropping up.

Yesterday there were a bunch of reports of people encountering a “storage full” error on Kindles when trying to add highlights, notes, or bookmarks. The error pops up even when the Kindle has plenty of storage space available.

It sounds like Amazon has already fixed the problem for the most part, but if you still encounter the error hold down the power button and then select Restart, and that should fix the issue after your Kindle reboots. That’s pretty much the answer to everything in this type of situation.

There seems to be some other problems with the software update as well. There are reports of extra white space getting added to the margins of manga files. Some say it goes back to normal when you sign out of your Amazon account, but then the problem returns when signing back in.

I’ve heard some reports of extra blank pages getting added to comics for some Kindle Scribe users too, but I think that’s been going on for a while now.

It seems like Kindles are getting buggier with each passing year. I think the Kindle Scribe is at the root of the problem in some ways. Ever since Amazon released the Kindle Scribe all their software development is centered around it. Regular Kindles are getting fewer new features than they use to, and they keep trying to shoehorn changes from the Kindle Scribe into the regular Kindle software, like how they’re changing bookmarks and started lumping them in with notes and highlights.

I just tried to download a personal document PDF onto my Kindle Paperwhite with the latest 5.19.2 software and it got stuck on “queued” and wouldn’t do anything. I canceled the download and the file magically appeared as downloaded, so who knows what’s going on. There seems to be a lot of issues downloading stuff lately too, even before this most recent update.

Have you encountered any new bugs on your Kindle since updating?

A couple of years ago I saw a video of a person that claimed that Amazon is switching over to AI programing and letting go of a portion of their human programmers. I wonder if this might be a contributing factor to these update issues.

Yes, I also got the same issue for the comic. I can’t go landscape, no flip page animation and also margin issues. Hope they can fix it;(

Is there a way to turn off automatic updates? I recently started using a kindle again after 5+ years using a Kobo Libra and a Pocketbook ereader (I didn’t switch to kindle because I was unhappy with either, I just wanted to check out the Colorsoft).

The only way to keep Kindles from updating is to keep them in airplane mode all the time, unless your Kindle is jailbroken.

Yeah, I shouldn’t have linked to that guy’s video if he’s going to start making ridiculous claims like that to get views (and I’m going to remove the link now). Amazon cleary hasn’t disabled sideloading.

Was the video you removed mine? I definitely received some negative feedback regarding that, so I decided to change the thumbnail and title and cut out the intro (I think I removed the first 12 seconds?) to remove the misleading information. Sorry, I’ll do better in the future.

Kindle broke sideloading in firmware 5.19.2 for manga and comics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPmuvWb6Wl8

Gee, it’s almost like all those cost-cutting lay-offs that Jeffy B demanded — dude REALLY loves his yachts and $50 million weddings, doncha know — have consequences.

Keep this understaffed quality-thing in mind, next time you go shopping for a new e-reader: Let your last Kindle be your last Kindle, ever.

      Yeah, but – which one?

I want a high quality screen, ideally the best possible one, at least 8 inches, and I want a metal case, because I usually despise the haptics of plastic/rubber. And a frontlight.

What I don‘t need: color, AI, or note taking.

So far I‘ve come up with the viwood aipaper mini, don‘t know how it „feels“ though, and it has no warm frontlight. I am also not sure I am more comfortable with giving my data to Alphabet and a Chinese manufacturer rather than Amazon.

Honestly a bit at a loss.

My Kindle Colorsoft SE auto-updated and Dark Mode is gone from the pull down menu. I don’t personally use Dark Mode so it’s not a big loss for me, but is this a glitch or intentional?

My 12th Gen Paperwhite has the latest update and still has Dark Mode.

My highlighting function is not working properly. I use it for annotation and while I now have the green color, any passage I try to select now connects to the next passage instead of the option to separate and use the multiple colors, the entire purpose of using them for annotation.

MOBI is an outdated, dead format. You really should try using newer formats or Send to Kindle.
