The good folks at CrossPoint have released another software update for the Xteink X4 and X3 that improves performance and fixes some bugs.
They also added some new features, including the ability to add bookmarks in EPUB ebooks, which is nice since that’s one of the few features the stock software had that CrossPoint didn’t.
According to the release notes, the 1.4.0 update includes 152 changes from 50 contributors. Apparently, a lot of the changes are performance related so this should be the snappiest version of CrossPoint yet. They also added a couple of new font types, Domitian and Libre Baskerville, and they added a font preview window so you can see how it looks before selecting. The X3 got a clock as well, and they added a custom sleep timer. You can also choose to show the last page read on the sleep screen now.
This is good timing if you bought an Xteink X4 or X3 during the Prime Day sale. I would highly recommend installing CrossPoint or some other custom software because the stock software isn’t very good. I had a lot of problems with the X3 freezing up while trying to use the stock software, and it refuses to load some books without freezing again, and the same books work fine on CrossPoint.
If you haven’t flashed custom software before, it’s really easy to do directly from the CrossPoint Reader website using their web flasher tool. Just plug your Xteink device into your computer using a USB cable and follow the directions.
It’s pretty cool how Xteink ereaders have turned into something that people can use to run custom open-source software without having to jump through a bunch of jailbreaking or hacking hoops. Even the locked down versions sold from websites like AliExpress have the ability to run custom software.
