Motorola Xoom Video Review – Hands-on

April 4, 2011 by Nathan

Motorola Xoom

My WiFi-only Motorola Xoom arrived last Tuesday, two days before my belated iPad 2, so I’ve been testing it extensively over the past week and thought I’d put together a thorough video review of the Xoom in action.

So far I’ve been very impressed with the Motorola Xoom. It is surprisingly comfortable to hold and the 9-10 hour battery life is as advertised. What really jumps out is the 10.1″ 1280 x 800 screen is the perfect size. It’s not as narrow as the Notion Ink Adam’s screen in portrait mode and it’s not squarish like the iPad’s screen. It’s funny how 3 devices all with approximately 10″ screens can be so different in size.

I got a taste of Android 3.0 Honeycomb on the Nook Color, but the full version on the Xoom is exceptional. It’s new and still suffers from some bugs and force closes for some apps, but overall it is leaps and bounds above previous versions of Android on tablets. In fact, if you’re thinking about buying an Android tablet anytime soon, I’d definitely suggest waiting to get one with Honeycomb if not the Xoom.

I’ll save the rest of the details for the written review, of which I’ll start working on this week and will probably post next week. I’ll post an extensive comparison between the Xoom and the iPad 2 in the near future as well.

This is the first video with a new camera and I’m still learning its quirks. The auto-focus makes it look like there are lines on the Xoom’s screen that aren’t visible in person. Next time I’ll lock the focus and will stop all the hand gestures to make the video more watchable. Plus, the video file was 5 minutes too long to upload the high-quality version so now that I know that the next videos will be high-def.
