Onyx Boox M96 PDF Video Review

Onyx Boox M96

The first video of the new Onyx Boox M96 turned up on YouTube today. It’s a quick video demonstrating how to setup a PDF file for optimal viewing.

The Onyx Boox M96 is the latest 9.7-inch E Ink ebook reader from Onyx. It’s essentially an updated version of the Boox M92, aka the Icarus Excel that I reviewed two years ago.

The Boox M96 runs Android 4.0, and supports Google Play. It has a 1200 x 825 resolution E Ink Pearl display, and has a digitizer touchscreen that enables on-screen annotations and input with an included stylus pen.

The device comes with 4GB of built-in storage, and there’s a memory card slot for additional expansion. It has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, plus there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The video shows how to setup PDF files for optimum viewing, including how to darken text, zoom in to reduce margins, remove status bars, add handwritten notes, reflow text, etc.

The video was uploaded by Booxtor from a German ebook reader retailer, eReader store.de, where the Onyx Boox M92 sells for 269 euros plus shipping and tax.

  1. The ONYX website claims on their FAQ that their products cannot set a password for the device. Given that the Android settings are exposed in the M96, can the user set a password?

    • No, they got it right. None of the Android ereaders I’ve tested ever have the option to set passwords. I think the Kindle is the only one.
