Amazon has rolled out a Kindle Challenge that runs through January where you can earn a $5 ebook credit for completing a series of challenges and earning badges.
Head over to the Kindle Challenge page at Amazon for the terms and conditions and to see the list of quests, as Amazon calls them. Apparently not all accounts are eligible but it’s worth checking if you want the free ebook credit.
The way it works is you get a $5 ebook credit after earning at least four diamond badges.
I like the idea of a reading challenge but they made this one way too easy. You can literally complete the challenge in 5 minutes without reading a single page in a book.
An easy way to get the credit is to follow an author, activate dark mode on a Kindle e-reader, set a reading goal using a Kindle app, and borrow an ebook from Prime Reading. Piece of cake. No reading required. Update: Apparently only the diamond-shaped quests are good for the $5 credit, so using dark mode doesn’t apply—Amazon sure made things confusing with this promotion.
Other things you can do to earn the credit is purchase any Kindle ebook during January, start reading a book in a series, and you can also signup for a free Kindle Unlimited trial to earn a badge.
It would’ve been cool if they offered a second credit for earning all of the badges. Now that would’ve been a real challenge…

“Sorry…
You are not eligible for this offer.”

Maki says
Yeah, me too! I’d have enjoyed this too.
cc says
I have a couple of the badges but I don’t see anything about a $5 credit? Or one for using dark mode?
Bb says
Same here
Tina Hamaker says
I am also not eligible for this offer. 😕
Daniel says
Nope. Not eligible.
Melanie Newbry says
Why wasn’t I eligible? I read a lot of books both Kindle unlimited and ones I purchased.
Chris says
Also not eligible.
Fergus Duniho says
The Amazon page doesn’t say anything about a $5.00 ebook credit. Where did you get this information from?
Nathan says
Apparently not everyone is getting the same offer. I just clicked on a banner at Amazon; I don’t have any inside information about the stipulations of the promotion.
Mikou says
I clicked on the Kindle Challenge link and under “How it works”, #3 was “Get $5 in eBook credit for earning at least four diamond badges.”
If it’s not there, presumably your account does not qualify.
Mikou says
The Dark Mode is not one of my options. I have badges for reading for 7 days, 15 days, 30 days, reading on Jan 19th, following an author, buying an e-book, reading a Kindle e-book to completion, starting to read a series, setting a reading goal, signing up for Kindle Unlimited (trial or free). And one badge for completing all the other available badges.
I completed 2 before I knew about the challenge (starting series, setting goal). And I bought a book, followed an author and read an ebook (single issue comic). Just waiting to be credited for those badges.
Patrick says
You should receive the very special ‘Amazon Time Travel’ badge for reading a book on January 19th!
Mikou says
I didn’t mean I earned the badges, LOL. Those were just my possibilities. The ones I actually earned are the ones I mentioned as completed in my 2nd paragraph. And I just reread the challenge page and noticed that only the diamond badges count to earn the $5.
Nathan says
I think you have to visit the page before the challenges take effect. I saw a post on reddit with a picture of the challenge and apparently there are different badges for different accounts. I think they only put the dark mode option there for people who have a Kindle that supports dark mode.
Mikou says
That makes sense. I only have a basic Kindle that I never even registered.
bloodynibbler says
I also don’t qualify. Wonder if that’s due to location, other deals, or reading frequency? I just got a 5$ credit last month for buying 25$ in ebooks, and I easily shell out $15/month in Kindle store as well as Kindle unlimited.
Teo says
How long do you have to read each day for it to count?
Mikou says
I can’t find a time requirement in any of the terms and conditions, so I’ve just been reading a short story daily.
Karen says
The page comes up for me with a lot of possible badges to earn but most of them are grayed out. The only ones I can click on now are start a series, follow an author, buy a Kindle book for at least 99 cents, register a Kindle device (which I do not have, only the Kindle app on my tablet and already registered). I can’t click on set a reading goal, even though it’s there, just grayed out. Maybe that will change over time?
Mikou says
The grayed out badges are ones that you haven’t earned yet. You should be able to click on the ‘i; for any given badge to get a little more info about the requirements to earn that badge. The badges in color are the ones you already completed and earned. Once you complete a challenge, it may take up to 72 hours for it to be credited to you.
To set a reading challenge, go to the home screen on the Kindle app on a phone or tablet. I couldn’t find it on the PC app and I’m not using a Kindle e-reader, so I don’t know if you can set it there.
tori says
Only the diamond-shaped badges count toward the $5 credit, at least for my offer. So dark mode (Night Owl), which is hexagonal-shaped, apparently doesn’t qualify. It’s just an “achievement.”
Nathan says
Wow, how bizarre, I didn’t even notice that. Nice catch. This challenge keeps getting more confusing by the day.
Scott says
Looks like they removed the badge for signing in to the kindle app. Did it retro-actively, too – so I went from four badges to three.
Erin says
It is confusing. I am on the Reddit page where it was first announced. Some have 11, some 12. Some don’t get it offered at all, some a credit, some bragging rights. I will not be able to get the 5.00 credit because of options of my diamonds, but still partaking for fun since I’m reading anyway.
sharon says
I’ve been reading every day this month and it says I’ve only been reading 10 days with 17 days left in the month. And it says something about a badge for goal setter but my kindle doesn’t have the means to set goals. SMH
Nathan says
The goal setter is an option with Kindle apps, not Kindle e-readers, and it says it can take 72 hours to update so that could be why the day count is lower than it should be.
Raechel says
I also don’t have the $5 one, but, having an issue with Quitter’s Day. My reading insights has me at 437 day streak, and it still isn’t showing quitters day. It is showing two badges I’ve gotten since that day. It’s really bugging me.
Nathan says
It appears this isn’t being executed all that well on Amazon’s end. It seems a lot of people are having problems getting certain badges to appear so don’t let it bother you.
Erin @ Paperbackstash says
That one was delayed for me as well, can take up to 72 hours. Hopefully you get yours if you havent already.
Kelly says
I now have every single badge. How/when do we get the $5? It does say that I will get the $5 credit if I completed 4 badges, which I did early on, but I would think completing all, the credit will show up?//
Nathan says
The FAQ says by February 15th.
