Another Kindle Bug – Document Covers No Longer Displaying on Lockscreen

February 18, 2023 by Nathan 8 Comments

Kindle Cover Bug

There’s yet another Kindle bug going around. This is at least the third one this year, along with the blank screen issue and the disappearing notes bug on the Kindle Scribe.

This new issue is relatively minor but annoying. Basically, documents are no longer showing covers on the lockscreen when the Kindle is turned off. Instead it’s just showing Amazon’s random screensaver images, even with the Display Cover option enabled in settings. It only seems to affect documents sent to Kindles using email or send-to-Kindle.

I saw this mentioned over on reddit a couple of days ago and now it’s affecting my Kindle Paperwhite too. Oddly enough, my Kindle Scribe is still showing document cover images on the lockscreen, but I’ve been keeping it in airplane mode to avoid the blank screen bug.

I wonder if these bugs are only happening to Kindles that are connected online? That’s the case with my Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition.

The issue appears to be affecting all downloaded documents, not just one or two here and there. Hopefully it’s just a bug that Amazon will fix and not a new change to disable lockscreen covers for documents permanently. Document cover images still appear in the library list like normal so that shouldn’t be the case, but with Amazon you never know.

This has to be especially annoying for people that spent an extra $20 for an ad-free Kindle to show book covers on the lockscreen, only to have generic images show up now instead. Book covers on purchased Kindle books are still working properly, though.

Is your Kindle experiencing this new bug? I think I’m going to start keeping all my Kindles in airplane mode until the Kindle developers get their act together. This is getting ridiculous. Kindles never used to have this many random problems.

Not sure I would call it a bug, considering I define a bug as defective coding. More like someone decided to turn off the feature remotely. Hopefully by the next update it will be fixed. Need to send in those feedbacks to let them know this is not a good thing.

I read on the community pages on Amazon that Amazon is aware of the problem and is working on it.

It’s working for me too here in Mexico. Just had to ask it to do a manual sync.

I noticed while this was happening, my Voyage started showing book covers again. But when they “fixed it”, it stopped showing covers.

Do we know if they’ve fixed this yet? I’ve just recently connected mine to my new internet after not using it for a while and I’m having this issue.
