Onyx has released a new firmware update for their Boox devices that adds some new features and a new minimalistic user interface.
The new software version is V3.5.3, and Onyx says it’s going to be rolled out in batches so it won’t be available for everybody and once, and different models will get the update at different times.
Outside of their new devices, Onyx doesn’t specify exactly which models are getting the update, but one of my older Boox eNotes got the 3.5 update earlier this year, and that model was over 4 years old, so hopefully the 3.5.3 update will eventually trickle down to some of the older models as well.
Onyx posted this article on their website that with a summary of the new features, and they also uploaded the video below showing some of the new features in action.
One of the biggest changes with the new software is a redesigned user interface that’s supposed to be easier to navigate with a more minimalistic appearance.
They also added a new system-wide FreeMark feature for their eNote models that lets you write on the screen within third-party apps and on webpages using the web browser. FreeMarks get saves as screenshots and are viewable from the Gallery.
Another new feature is the ability to do screen mirroring with PCs, tablets, and any device with a web browser using BooxDrop.
They also finally added support for Dark Mode for the built-in NeoReader app so you can read with white text on a black background. I’ve been testing this on the Boox Go Color and it seems to work pretty well, but only the book gets inverted, not any of the menus or interface.
Here’s a look at the new software in the video below. Like usual, software updates can be downloaded from the main settings menu on Boox devices, but it might take awhile for it to show up depending on which model you have. Apparently there’s no going back once your device updates so keep that in mind before accepting the update.

Weird that everything features the Note Air 3 C, yet I can’t get the update yet.
Could it be it’s being rolled out by regions?
