If you’re looking to get a new Kindle for cheap, Best Buy currently has the 2022 Kindle on sale for $79.99 with free shipping.
It’s the older model, but it’s still the same generation as the current Kindle, which, frankly, doesn’t make a lick of sense, but they only changed a few details on the 2024 model so they’re mostly the same.
The newer model has slightly better contrast and a brighter frontlight, but pretty much everything else is exactly the same. See my 2022 vs 2024 Kindle comparison review for a closer look.
The 2022 model used to have the advantage of having access to Download and Transfer, which was phased out on the 2024 models, but now that Amazon has discontinued D&T that no longer matters.
The only other minor difference is the fact the 2022 model uses USB mass storage when connecting it to a computer to transfer files via USB, whereas the 2024 model uses MTP. It doesn’t really matter with Windows computers, but Macs require additional software to use MTP and some people don’t like that.
The newer version sells for $109 so you can save $30 by getting the older version while it’s on sale. It’s not a huge discount by any means but it might be worth it if you don’t care about having a brighter frontlight at the max setting, and slightly darker black ink that’s really only noticeable when you have both Kindles side-by-side.
Of course you could just hold out for the newer model to go on sale again, but Amazon doesn’t put Kindles on sale as frequently as they used to. In fact, I don’t think the 2024 Kindle has gone on sale since Black Friday, and that’s the only time it’s been on sale since they released it, but they’ll probably mark it down for Mother’s Day in a couple months.
