In May of 2024 I posted an article about how Amazon had put the international version of the Kindle Oasis on sale for 50% off. It’s now 16 months later and it’s still on sale—they can’t seem to get rid of them.
It’s hard to believe they’ve had the International Kindle Oasis on sale for that long. If they were selling them in the US at that price they’d be sold out in a week, but Amazon refuses to ship them to US addresses for some reason, even though they’ve sold international models on Woot before.
What’s crazy is this is the upgraded model with 4G LTE wireless connectivity, which Amazon doesn’t even offer on any of the newer Kindles anymore. These used to sell for $349.99 before Amazon discontinued the Kindle Oasis in early 2024.
Being able to get one of these for $175 in brand new condition is still a really good price; it’s surprising Amazon is having so much trouble getting rid of them. People are selling used ones on eBay for more than that.
The fact that Amazon is only willing to sell these to certain countries is clearly a big impediment. But if you have a shipping address outside the US you can still get a good deal on the Kindle Oasis.
One thing I noticed about this that’s interesting is Amazon apparently doesn’t consider the international versions as part of their security updates. On the Kindle security updates page Amazon says, “Your Kindle E-reader receives guaranteed software security updates until at least four years after the device is last available for purchase on our websites”.
But if you go down the list, it says the Kindle Oasis will receive security updates through 2028, which is only 3 years instead of the stated 4 years. They’re clearly going off of last year as the end date, but they’re still selling them on their website in new condition so that doesn’t exactly add up now does it.
Nonetheless, $175 is still a really good price for a Kindle Oasis with 4G LTE and without ads in new condition. Amazon might never release a Kindle with page buttons and a premium build quality like that ever again.
I’m not a fan of the design, but for $175, I’d be willing to give the Oasis a chance. I live in the US though so I am unable to purchase.
