Samsung Galaxy Tab S Tablets Unveiled, Come with Outdoor Readable High-res AMOLED Displays

June 13, 2014 by Nathan Groezinger

Samsung is on a tablet-releasing binge this year. They just released their Pro series of tablets a few months ago, then the budget line of Galaxy Tab 4 tablets came along, and now Samsung is getting set to release a third set of high-end tablets next month.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S series looks to be Samsung’s best tablets yet. One big reason is because of the screen. They are the first tablets from Samsung to feature Super AMOLED displays.

There are two models of Galaxy Tab S tablets. One with an 8.4-inch screen and one with a 10.5-inch screen. Both have the same resolution of 2560 x 1600. That’s 369 ppi and 295 ppi respectively.

In addition to having better color and contrast, Samsung claims their new Super AMOLED displays are clearly and easily readable outdoors, even in bright sunlight. Samsung also includes adaptive display software to automatically adjust the display based on ambient lighting conditions.

As far as specs are concerned, both tablets run Android 4.4 KitKat and have front and rear cameras, 2.1MP and 8MP with LED flash. They come with 16GB or 32GB of storage space, and include a microSD card slot for cards up to 128MB. There’s GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a fingerprint sensor, and 3GB of RAM. The processor is either a Exynos 5 Octa (1.9 GHz QuadCore + 1.3 GHz Quadcore) or Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.3 GHz Quadcore.

Both tablets are exceptionally thin and light. At 6.6mm they are only about a quarter-inch thick. The 8-inch model weights 294 grams and the 10.5-inch weighs 465 grams. Battery life is rated at 11 hours.

The Galaxy Tab S tablets will both be available starting in July. The 8.4-inch model starts at $399 and the 10.4-inch tab starts at $499.

Update: The Galaxy Tab S tablets are already up for pre-order from Amazon and other online retailers. The release date is June 26th.
