Video Tour of Onyx’s E Ink Devices at CES 2020

February 11, 2020 by Nathan

Onyx Note2

I don’t know what’s with the delayed upload, but Charbax has posted an in-depth video of Onyx’s booth at CES 2020.

They don’t really show anything in the video that we haven’t seen before, but there’s a tour of Onyx’s current ereaders and their upcoming E Ink phone that’s expected to get released sometime in the next couple of months.

They also talk about things beyond the devices themselves.

It sounds like they are doing well in the US market, for instance, and they’re looking for new ways to market their products to businesses and even sports teams for things like diagramming football plays with the outdoor readable display.

Over the past year Onyx has added a number of new software features to their devices with firmware updates, and they recently upgraded their software platform to Android 9.0.

Onyx still hasn’t released the promised upgrade to Android 9.0 on some of their older devices, however, so hopefully they get that done soon.

One thing I was wondering about is a possible upgrade to the 7.8-inch Onyx Nova Pro, but they didn’t mention anything about that in the video. It was released before the Note Pro, which was replaced by the Note2 three months ago, so it’s logical to expect an upgrade to the Nova line as well.

It’s so lulzy that Google demands they put cameras on e-ink phones. Nobody will ever use them. Front-facing cameras are insane too. I have a hole they punched in my phone’s display for TWO cameras I’ll literally never use. Who the heck wants to see MY ugly mug? Ever? The tech industry is insane, that’s my conclusion. Maybe it’s the microdosing.

Color eink phone is arriving sooner than later, but, what about a color ereader? With that astonishing technology it’s the next easy step, isn’t it?

Unless they scientifically prove that LCD screens are damaging people’s eyes, I still think color E Ink is just another pipe dream. Most people aren’t going to be interested in paying astronomical prices for something that’s slow and looks washed out compared to LCD screens. It’s a niche product in a niche market. I just don’t see there being enough demand to allow the market to grow.

Well, we don’t know their price yet and it may cause old black/white/grey eink screens cut their prices

It’s safe to assume the prices are going to be astronomical based on the prices of their current color screens. And the black and white screens are made by the same company so why would they cut the prices? They have a monopoly on the market, which is part of the problem and why the technology evolves at a snail’s pace.
