For a long time Amazon has offered a trade-in program for Kindle ereaders to get 20% off the price of a new Kindle, plus a credit for the old Kindle. It’s one of the things that no other ereader companies offer.
Apparently Best Buy also has a similar trade-in program for Kindle ereaders and Fire tablets.
The main difference with Best Buy’s program is it’s an in store only offer, but like Amazon, you get 20% off the price of a new Kindle or Fire tablet, along with a credit for the trade-in.
I noticed the trade-in values are different on some models than what Amazon offers so it’s worth checking both to see who offers the most. For instance, Amazon will give a $20 credit for the current entry-level Kindle, but Best Buy only offers $15. It looks like Best Buy has better values on some Paperwhite models, though.
There are some other stipulations in the fine print to be aware of as well. They say trade-ins aren’t available in all locations and some stores may have additional limitations, and unlike Amazon they don’t accept broken devices (Amazon will still give you $5 for a broken Kindle plus 20% off a new one).

The Best Buy trade in isn’t in-store only. There’s a “Send in Your Trade” link on the Best Buy page you linked to.
After you select your Kindle model and its condition, the fine print under Your Estimated Trade-In Value says “Take your trade-in item to a Best Buy store near you or mail in your item to receive an e-Gift Card for the value of your trade-in.
That said, the trade-in values are pretty bad. They only offered me $10 on a 9th edition Oasis in good condition. Amazon offered $75.
Once you receive the 20% off promotional credit, if you do a trade in with Amazon, how long is it good for? Amazon states it’s a limited time offer, but doesn’t say how long.
I’m not sure. You’d probably be better off just waiting until you’re ready to pull the trigger on a new one.

I don’t understand why anyone on earth would want to do this. You’ll get back much more by just selling your Kindle on ebay. I recently sold a last gen Paperwhite for around $80, where as I would’ve only gotten a $30 gift card trading it into Amazon. So it’d be even less going the Best Buy route. No thanks.
Yeah, eBay can be a good way to get rid of older Kindles but you’re forgetting to account for the 20% off a new Kindle part of the deal. It depends on which model you’re getting, of course, but if you’re trading up to a 32GB Kindle Oasis for $300 you’re also getting an additional $60 off in trade. Plus with eBay you have to pay like 13% in fees and hope the buyer doesn’t make up some excuse to force a return or refund (been there, and eBay takes their side 99% of the time).
I just traded an entry-level Kindle for the new Kids Kindle Paperwhite at Amazon and got $20 for the Kindle, plus $32 off the new Kindle, so $52 total for a Kindle that was just selling for $59.99 brand new last week at Amazon ($49 on Woot). To me that’s a helluva lot better than dealing with eBay. These Best Buy values seem to be worse so I wouldn’t deal with them either but I didn’t know they even offered a program like this so I thought it might be worth mentioning considering the topic is relevant to this website.
