I wonder if Amazon has decided to phase out the 8GB version of the Kindle Paperwhite, or maybe they’re just having stock issues, but it’s been out of stock for a while now.
You can still order the 8GB Kindle Paperwhite from Amazon for $139.99, but the webpage says it isn’t expected to ship for 1-3 months—that’s quite a long time to wait when you can just get the 16GB version in a few days for $10 more. It’s the same story for both the ad-supported version and the ad-free model.
I also checked the Amazon Canada website and it’s not available from there either, and there is no expected ship date listed—you can only buy them used.
Then I checked the Amazon UK website and the 8GB version doesn’t appear to exist at all there, and they only list the 16GB option on their comparison tables.
Amazon used to offer an 8GB version of the Kindle Paperwhite Kids, but they stopped selling it about a year ago, and now they only offer the 16GB version so it wouldn’t be surprising if they decided to ditch the regular 8GB model as well at some point.
The entry-level Kindle is only available in a 16GB variant, so it’s kind of weird the “upgraded” Paperwhite model is still available with half the storage space, but it is $10 cheaper than the 16GB version and 8GB is still enough to hold thousands of ebooks.
It’s gotten to the point where the amount of storage space available on ereaders doesn’t really matter unless you’re a heavy reader that wants to have all your books downloaded and available all at once.
Personally, I’d be fine with 2GB of storage space if it came with a lower price tag, but most people seem to want as much storage space as they can get these days.
Some people download lots of audio books?
Personally, I would do that on my phone.
I have the 16 gigs version. The 8 gigs was not available at the time. Last October I think.
The larger storage space for us is very important. We both have all of our books downloaded to our readers because the internet in our area is very spotty and the slightest raindrop, wisp of wind or snowflake will cut internet service for days.
For my needs and the way I use my kindles, I don’t need all of the storage. I only keep on my kindles the books I am reading and if I know I am about to finish a book I will download the next book or books to read from my list. It is just so much less confusing that way.
I’d prefer micro SD card support across all newer Kindle e readers. That would be better than having multiple memory types of the same reader in my opinion.
