The Kobo Libra 2 is back and it’s available to purchase from Kobo’s website again. Both the black and white versions are in stock, and they’re selling for $159 with free shipping. The only catch is they are certified refurbished, not new.
On the plus side, that’s $30 less than they sold for new, and Kobo’s refurbished units come with the same warranty as new ones.
When Kobo released the new Kobo Libra Colour a few months ago, they discontinued the Kobo Libra 2 soon after. Once they stopped selling it it became harder to find, and it started selling above retail where you could find it (even used ones are still selling above retail on Amazon right now).
A lot of people were disappointed that Kobo didn’t release a new black white version to go along with the color model, and to make matters worse Kobo discontinued the Libra 2 so there was no alternative to the color model for those that wanted a Libra without a color screen.
I still think the Kobo Libra 2 has one of the best screens on the market in terms of contrast and clarity, and the frontlight is more even than other Kobos for some reason.
Kobo has a long history of continuing to update older models so there’s no reason to worry about it suddenly becoming unsupported even though it’s no longer in production.
If you’re trying to decide between the Libra 2 and the color version, you might want to check out my Kobo Libra Colour vs Libra 2 comparison review. Outside of the screens, there’s not much difference between them, but the Libra 2 does not support the Kobo stylus like the new color model, so that’s one thing to consider if you want to take notes.
