There’s a new Android-powered ereader with a 6″ color E Ink screen being advertised on Amazon lately called the Cognita Tab 6 Pro C from a company called Bemi that’s based in China.
The product images don’t portray an accurate depiction of color E Ink, but there are better pictures on the Bemi website. It appears to have been released earlier this year so it’s been available for a little while, but this is the first time I’ve seen it on Amazon, and none of their other ereaders are currently listed.
The Bemi Cognita Tab 6 Pro C has some interesting qualities and some questionable qualities (and a name that’s way too long), but it sits in a unique spot where few alternatives exist so that might intrigue some folks.
It’s one of the few models available with a 6″ color E Ink screen that runs Android. It does run an older version of Android, however, Android 11. But at least that’s better than some of Bemi’s other models that run Android 8, and they say it comes with Google Play pre-installed for apps.
The software supports most common ebook, image and audio formats, including EPUB, PDF, CBR, CBZ, DOC, FB2, JPG, MP3, among several others.
The specs are about what you’d expect for a budget Android ereader. It has a quad-core CPU (Cortex-A55) with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. There’s a microSD card slot that supports cards up to 256GB. It supports dual-band Wifi and Bluetooth 4.2. It has a USB-C port and a 2200 mAh battery. It weighs 180 grams.
It has a 6-inch Kaleido 3 screen with 300 ppi for black and white and 150 ppi for color, the same as similar models. It also has frontlight with adjustable color temperature.
The price is listed at $179, which is the same as the Kobo Clara Colour with the same screen so it’s priced competitively. One of Bigme’s 39 different models (I stopped trying to keep track) might be a better buy, though. There’s the Bigme B6 that runs Android 14 with 4GB of RAM at a slightly higher price of $199, but it has some other drawbacks. There’s also the Musnap Neo 2C with Android 14 and some upgraded specs, but at $239 it’s quite a bit more expensive.
