Okay. Here’s one of the most bizarre ebook reader concepts you are ever going to see: An ereader from Paperus that is shaped like a pen and scrolls as you spin it.
Take a look at the video below to see it in action. If you’ve ever dreamed of being able to read on a pen (who hasn’t) then this is the ereader for you.
I’m not exactly sure if it is serious or a joke. It’s certainly not a real product in the video, and isn’t anything I could see myself ever using. It seems like it would be annoying and tiresome to have to spin it all the time unless there’s an auto-scroll feature or something.
The video gives the impression that you have to spin it manually to control the speed and direction of the text. Then you tap the ends to open the menu and make selections.
The Paperus device also doubles as a music player, and even has a headphone jack on the left side of the cylinder to plug in headphones.
There are no specs for this device, not even a functioning website to get more information from. So don’t hold your breath.
The ereading field needs some new innovation, but I’m not sure this is it. Paperus gets high marks for creativity and uniqueness, though.
Stupidity has reached a new level with this. Can you imagine how annoying it would be to roll constantly to advance down a page? This is ridiculous. Think about reading this for an hour…
I have thought for a long time that a single or few line ebook reader might be an interesting idea. The problem I have with this concept is that holding it seems like it would be awkward, not to mention rolling it continuously to scroll. On the other hand if you are just rolling it a little like a motorcycle throttle to control the speed and direction of scrolling it would be better.
That would be hard on the eyes and brain. When we read normally, we’re really seeing more than just the immediate line. Our brains are subconsciously scanning ahead and anticipating ends of sentences, paragraph structure, etc. This device prevents you from seeing the words in the structural context. I think most people would find that annoying.
What a great boone for cheating on final exams!!!!
