There’s a new firmware update available from Amazon for the Kindle Touch. I just installed it and haven’t noticed any improvements or changes whatsoever. Maybe page turns are a little faster—it’s hard to tell.
The only real difference I can find is that it kills the landscape mode trick I posted about the other day. Instead of showing buttons for rotating the screen, it just shows the code for the buttons instead. This probably means the update breaks other Kindle Touch hacks as well.

It’s been a busy week of updates for Kobo. They issued firmware updates for the Kobo Vox, Kobo Touch, and their desktop software too.
Kobo is one of those companies that continues to build on their products after release. This is at least the 6th update for the Kobo Touch, with each one adding some shiny new features, and about the third update for the Kobo Vox.

Barnes and Noble suck. They just issued an update for the Nook Tablet that effectively turns it from a full-blown Android tablet into a glorified color ereader with benefits.
The firmware update, version 1.4.1, closes the Nook Tablet off from installing Android apps from non-B&N sources. So now instead of having tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of apps available to load on the Nook, now users are stuck with only what B&N provides, about 2000 apps, some of which are 2-3 times what they sell for from other appstores.

Barnes and Noble released the much-anticipated new firmware for the Nook Color today, version 1.4.1.
According to Barnes and Noble, the update adds over 100 enhancements. The most prominent change is the addition of Netflix for streaming movies and tv shows.

Sony has issued a firmware update for the Sony PRS-T1 ebook reader. The update is supposed to fix some bugs like the freezing and random page flipping issues that some users are experiencing (not me, luckily).
In order to install the update, you need to connect your Sony Reader to your computer with the USB cable and then launch the Sony Desktop software. If it doesn’t prompt to install the new firmware automatically, hit the help button then “check for updates”.

Barnes and Noble officially slashed the price of the Nook Touch down to $99
today at the Nook Tablet announcement. They also have a firmware update for the Nook Touch to add some improvements.
First off, B&N deserves a ton of credit for dropping the price of the Nook Touch from $139 to $99 in light of Amazon’s new Kindle Touch and Kindle 4. A 28 percent price-cut is huge. And considering the Nook Touch doesn’t have ads, it is the best deal of the bunch.

Amazon has started rolling out a new software update, version 3.3, for the Kindle Keyboard, formally known as the Kindle 3.
The update gives the Kindle Keyboard the ability to sync and archive personal documents and non-Kindle ebooks (here’s the post from yesterday explaining this new Kindle feature in case you missed it: Uploading Non-Kindle eBooks and Personal Documents for Archiving and Syncing on Kindles).

The Kobo Touch received some new features yesterday via yet another firmware update, version 1.9.12.
The most prominent new features the update adds is the ability to add notes to ebooks using the on-screen keyboard and changing how the device interprets page turns.

There is already a firmware update for the new Kindle 4, version 4.0.1. The update adds the ability to turn on and off full page refresh.
Like the Nook Touch and Kobo Touch, the Kindle 4 has a new way of refreshing pages. Instead refreshing the entire screen with every page turn, just the text is refreshed. This makes page turns faster and smoother plus the screen doesn’t flash black with each turn, just once every six page turns.

The iriver Story HD ebook reader is on sale at Target for $99 until October 15th. It is normally priced at $139.
Even at that price I’m not sure I’d recommend it unless you just want a really basic ereader. The Kindle with Special Offers at $114 is a better value because the Kindle comes with a lot more features.
